AFTER THE EXCESSES of Christmas, some people decide to go alcohol-free in January.
Many people view the new year as the right time to start a health kick, with some choosing to curb alcohol for a few weeks at least.
We want to know: Are you having a dry January?

For those of us paid monthly , January is known as the famine month.
We’re all having a dry January, but not by choice.
Why is there so much month left at the end of the money?
I certainly am not planning any 3 day sessions for the next while, but a beer watching a game at home, or a glass of wine with dinner is fine. You know, normal, responsible drinking?
A beer isn’t normal in this country..
Good God no. January is the longest coldest most miserable month. If their were ever a time we needed the comfort of the odd drink this is it. Abstinence is for lent, this secular month of penitence is just another example of health becoming the new religion.
I wish everyone good health, and I’ll raise a glass to that!

Gave up the liquor for January 1998, then stayed off it for the year, still off it 19 years later.

Thanks Jack, can’t say it was too much of a penance though – now giving up chocolate, that would be different story…..

One pint and 3 glasses of wine over the Christmas and new year, hardly a reason to give up drinking for January, far better for me to stop eating shoite and get out and about.
Forecast til Thursday is dry but weekend is going to be wet unsure about the rest of the month!

I’ll certainly still have the odd beer and glass of wine. I don’t believe in making yourself miserable just because it’s January. As long as you dont binge I think small amounts of alcohol are probably ok.
I don’t really like the taste of alcoholic drinks.

Many have a drink problem not of their own making.
They can’t afford to drink under this government too!
Alcoholism is of your own making. I get that addiction is a difficult thing to get under control, but it is of people’s own making.

I don’t get it. You’re saying many people have drinking problems that isn’t their own fault? But they can’t afford to drink because of the government? Is it the governments fault they can’t drink or is it the governments fault they would like to drink? I’m very confused

Yes off it until lent-then I drink for 40 days-so I’m off it after that for 325 days-should give the system time to recover!!??#%%
I refrained from excessive alcohol intake for the bulk of December and will consume more in January , started y/day and will continue today. Let everyone else make their “resolutions”, watch Operation Transformation and all that other rubbish.

Does a drink finished after ringing in the New Year count against a dry January or is it only from when you get up on the 1st?

Binge drinking makes me so lethargic. I might have a glass of red wine with dinner at the weekend it’s supposed to be good 4 ya..
Had a dry 2016. Anyway January is a good month to give it a break, a nice detox from the sessions over the festive period
