Maintenance fees, contactless and ATM charges - here's how much you're paying your bank

Do you know how much you’re paying out for using your cards?

Updated on 31 January at 6pm

DO KNOW HOW much you’re paying your bank every time you take out cash at an ATM or use your card for contactless payments? And let’s not forget about those maintenance fees.

Mark Whelan from price comparison site, bonkers.ie told TheJournal.ie that “the days of free banking are long gone”, but added that customers can make sure they’re getting the best deal for them by being aware of how much they’re being charged.

ATM charges range from 0 cent up to 35 cent, while contactless payments could be on the rise with AIB starting to charge 20c per use next month. Speaking about contactless, Whelan said:

This is an increasingly popular and incredibly handy way to pay for your €2 flat white every morning, but customers should know the cost of this convenience.

While AIB are set to charge 20 cent for each contactless payment from 24 February, Permanent TSB customers can actually make money as the bank will give 10c back for every contactless transaction under the bank’s Explore Account. It will pay out up to a maximum of €5 per month – that’s 50 contactless payments.

AIB have since announced that from 24 February they will continue to waive contactless fees.

ATM charges:

  • AIB - 35c
  • Bank of Ireland - 25c
  • KBC - 30c
  • Permanent TSB - 0c
  • Ulster Bank - 0c

Contactless charges:

  • AIB – 0c
  • Bank of Ireland – 1c
  • KBC – 0c
  • Ulster Bank – 0c
  • Permanent TSB – 0c, but with the bank’s Explore Account, customers will receive 10 cent back for every transaction, up to a maximum of €5 per month

Commenting on AIB’s upcoming payment, Whelan said, “It will be interesting to see which banks follow suit.”

Maintenance fees are another charge that each bank applies, however customers can usually avoid them by meeting certain criteria.

Whelan added, “Most banks do still offer ways to avoid those maintenance and transaction fees, which can really add up over the course of a year.

The criteria that must be met to avoid fees with one bank, may be a lot easier to meet than the criteria set by another, depending on each person’s spending habits.

Maintenance fees per quarter

  • AIB – €4.50
  • Bank of Ireland – €5
  • KBC – €6
  • Permanent TSB – €12
  • Ulster Bank – €12

Fee waivers

  • AIB – fee-free if customers keep €2,500 on deposit at all times
  • Bank of Ireland – there’s a €5 quarterly maintenance fee for all customers, but transaction fees will be waived for customers who keep €3,000 on deposit at all times
  • KBC – fee-free if customers lodge €2,500 every month
  • Permanent TSB – with the bank’s Explore Account, customers are charged €4 every month, but this can be offset by the fact that the bank will pay back 10c on every debit card transaction. However, this is capped at €5 a month. So, it is possible to actually make €12 over the course of a year.
  • Ulster Bank – fee-free if customers keep €3,000 on deposit at all times

Michelle O’Neill is absolutely correct in her call for this, but the North being the North; it is pretty obvious that the push from Michelle and the pushback from Arlene stems from something other than Coronavirus/public health.

@LangerDan: What about that funeral she attended not so long ago. Didn’t see much social distancing, did you? Plus did everybody there do self isolation after? Only thing she did with that statement was prove she is every bit hypocrite that she shamelessly branded to others.

@Richard Cronin: There has been more than enough hypocrisy to share around during this pandemic from many quarters. However it is important that we do not allow past hypocrisy create tunnel vision. I’d rather a hypocrite make a U-Turn than stick dogmatically to their original position. The issue here is, it makes perfect epidemiological sense to have an island wide solution to this; but the Northern parties are so entrenched in Green-Orange politics that such sound calls get proposed and opposed under a different light.

@LangerDan: so why are all the airports & harbors open? It’s not like the virus is going away anytime soon. Plus how is all this to be payed for? Most hypocrites are around for the sound bites but not for actual problem solving

She’s 100% right but unfortunately has undermined her own authority on Covid by attending Sinn Féin funeral that broke all common sense rules of social distancing.

@Richard Cronin: it is 14 days today since that funeral and as the numbers show, it was so well organised around social distancing regulations that not a single case of covid has been traced to it.

When it came to closing and opening schools, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales took a different approach than England, so why are they insistant that they MUST now maintain the common travel area controls (or rather a lack of controls) with the rest of UK.

It really is hard to take anything from SF seriously. This type of proposal requires consensus from the executive and that is the forum for such an initiative. This solo run is just sectarian politics at its worst.

@Richard Cronin: you are giving her too much credit. She doesn’t have any say in policy, she was appointed by the army council and is just a mouthpiece for them, the same as her clone in the south.
This is just an attempt by her handlers to leverage the covid crisis to suit their own agenda.
