Colm O'Gorman 'I have resolved to work every day to prove that love can trump hate'

For those of us who care deeply about freedom and human rights, there has never been a more vital moment for activism, writes Colm O’Gorman.

TODAY, A MAN who campaigned on a constant refrain of misogyny and xenophobia will become the next President of the United States.

2016 was a disheartening year for human rights. A promised refugee deal didn’t materialise and human rights defenders continue to live under threat. Every day, women in Ireland have their human rights seriously violated by our restrictive abortion laws.

All around the world, the forces of division seem to be gathering momentum.

US election results are example of a deeply troubling trend

For human rights activists, who already find themselves embattled and “undesirable” in many countries, it raises the stakes immensely that the new President of one of the world’s most powerful nations puts forward a political platform that championed hate and threatened to disavow many basic human rights protections.

It is a bleak outlook. But the future does not have to be like this. In the face of these trends we must to resolve to do one thing.

We must resist

We must resist those who attack us for standing up for the human rights. We must resist the cheapening of media discourse which seems more concerned with ratings and online clicks than with truth, objectivity and considered analysis. We must resist hopelessness.

We must resist any voice, including our own, telling us that the abuse of the human rights is not our concern, not our battle to fight. We must resist the cynicism that says we will not prevail.

Fear and hate do not have to win the day – they can be a catalyst for change. The vast majority of people in Ireland and around the world support equality, dignity, freedom for all people – the core values underpinning human rights. Those values are far too precious to discard; their protection far too fragile to take for granted.

Together, we must challenge oppression by calling it out and by standing in solidarity with those whose human rights are threatened. Nothing has ever defeated hate as successfully as the humanity of ordinary people working together to face it down. This is Amnesty International’s mission. This is who we are.

Looking forward to 2017

I am more determined than ever to work every day to end human rights abuses. I have resolved not to give in to division and hatred. I will challenge those who pretend to be agents of change, but use their power to protect and embolden their own privilege.

I have resolved to work to expose the cynical manipulation of social need, by those who seek to foster hate and division in an effort to grab and hold power. I have resolved to listen, with care and attention, to those with whom I passionately disagree, and then to make my case.

I have resolved to work every day to prove that love can trump hate, that real unity is not about unifying sections of society in opposition to others, but about uniting us all in the recognition that together, we are always better.

The world has been there many times before

We have seen how divisive rhetoric leads down an ugly road – dissenting voices are criminalised and those who are disadvantaged bear the brunt of vicious harassment, discrimination and violence. Thanks to the determined struggle of human rights activism through the decades has made leaps forward, often in the face of great adversity.

We need to keep up the fight. We must resist. For those of us who care deeply about freedom and human rights, there has never been a more vital moment for activism. Every day, I see how see how people facing great adversity can come together and mobilise to bring about positive change rooted in human rights.

Join us as we stand for the protection of human rights around the world.

Colm O’Gorman is Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland.

The thing that ultra left wing politicos like Mr O’Gorman don’t understand is not everybody thinks like them, if you think trump is all about hate then you are mistaken, I reckon he doesn’t care about anybody else apart from himself. People are sick of being told what they should care about and what they can or can’t say.

This constant and now daily anti-Trump hysteria is getting boring.

He won the election according to the law of the land and whether we like it or not he will be sworn in as the President of the good old US of A.

Where were all of these Americans that are coming out of the wood work to protest against him on election day?

He won and she lost and that is about it. In any case, I seriously doubt that one person can change the way that the US runs its business if they do not have support of the other politicians. Just look at Obama trying to shut down Guantanamo and 8 years later it is still open.

Better luck in 4 years and in the meantime he is the president.

It’s even sadder to see what has become of Amnesty. Once it was a principled organisation with a clear stance against political prisoners. The rot started in the early 90s when it became clear that the leadership was only interested in the political prisoners of pro-western regimes. Since then it has evolved into just another corner of the leftie echo chamber.

I agree Colm, perhaps for the first time.

It is for this reason that I will defend your attack on the right to life of the unborn with every fiber of my being.

You see, Mr. O’Gorman, you are a hypocrite and you have helped turn what was once a noble and passionate defender of human rights, Amnesty International, into just another professional protest group, a charity that exists for the sake of it, to beg for money, pay their CEO a big wage and to try justify its very existence by the occasional mail shot and PR circular.

You are pathetic, and your attack on the democratic vote of America suggests that you have little time for democracy, itself a basic human right.

Extremely disgusting and pathetic how a man can regurgitate so many connotations of division, hatred, unequal rights, womens abuse, violence, social unrest and harassment, without once mentioning one of, if not the biggest threat to these issues that skyrockeed the last two years.

The cheek of this pontificating do-gooder to not once mention the hundreds of lives lost to the barbaric acts of terrorism committed all around Europe at the hands of Europes “new arrivals” falsely labelled as refugees that he himself and the media elite have pushed for so earnestly, misreporting over and over again the attitudes, ages, sexes and religious affiliations of people arriving. All the while browbeating, condescending and intimidating any of the lowly public that dares voice concern over this continued, failing, forced multiculturalism of Europe which EU leaders have conceded has failed themselves.

No mention of the thousands of women or children sexually assaulted over the last few months and years directly as a result of you and your cronies biased news articles pumped out weekly condemning Europe for not bending over backwards enough to hordes of incompatible, dogmatic, military aged men masquerading as refugees.

The cognitive dissonance is astounding with these tossers. What’s best is they have nobody to blame but themselves, keep pushing and you’ll get Le Pen and a move to the right in Germany , the electorate has spoken already with Trump and Brexit, people have had enough of the patronizing from celebrities, career politicians, human rights quangos, musicians and the hashtag of the week.

Love and hate are not appropriate words to use when actually talking about policy differences. Was there any more love in the heart of serial bomber Obama than there is in Trumps? It’s not a grown up or useful way of looking at politics. Politics is about raising taxation and deciding where it is best spent. We vote for those whose views on that align best with our own.

The Human Rights industry appear to think we have an unlimited supply money to match their claimed unlimited supply of compassion. We do not and we are starting to notice.

The fact the Mr. O’Gorman blatantly uses a Clinton election slogan in this article shows just how partisan and politicized Amnesty International is. The likes of O’Gorman won’t tackle many of the real despots of this world, or the major perpetrators of human rights abuses. He’ll only target what suits his and his organisations highly questionable agenda. The nasty hubris of this man’s writing is breath taking and to go through his article to expose all the flawed arguments would take all day. I’ll take just 1 line:

“We must resist those who attack us for standing up for the human rights”

This is akin to Orwellian double speak as what you really intend is that those who stand up for the human rights of our own citizens here in the liberal West must be attacked and vilified.

That line should be rewritten: “We must attack those who resist us by standing up for their human rights”

I promise you Mr. O’Gorman that your despicable writings will only inspire more and more people like me and others here and around this country to become increasingly political so that we may stand up to this unending attack on our freedoms to think and speak in a free society.

The first duty of government, it is said, is to protect its citizens. This includes from the effect of mass immigration, but this is often forgotten by people like Colm and organisations like the now discredited Amnesty.

From a British House of Lords judgements:

“The right of the state to control immigration has, of course, long been recognised in international law. It forms the background to article 5(1)(f) of the Convention. This is why a Contracting State is permitted to deprive aliens, who have no right to be in the country, of their liberty for the purpose of preventing their unauthorised entry or with a view to their deportation or extradition. But it would be a serious error, in my opinion, to regard this case as about the right to control immigration. This is because the issue which the Derogation Order was designed to address was not at its heart an immigration issue at all.”

This is now however described by the likes of Colmas “racist” or “xenophobic.” They (Colm et al), wish to deprive populations of the right to protect their own rights to control who is allowed into their country.

It seems there is no recognition of human rights until birth takes place.
I have a major problem with that.

I appreciate there may be purist rights about abortion but I frequently note that you avoid any discussion about the right to life of the life in the womb.

I feel it’s a discussion you avoid because you realise it’s not a view that you can reconcile as an advocate of human rights.

The point is one of pedantic, I gave you an example of where the term child was used by a medical association in testimony to SCOTUS to describe the unborn.

You try to counter, in an exercise of point scoring, evidenced by the use of the word OUCH, pretty pathetic, giving an example of where the word child is not used or addressed. The terms the refer to may be accurate, but so is child.

In the case of Stinnet v Kennedy, the Alabama Supreme court ruled allowing for wrongful-death actions before the pre-born child becomes viable.

We all understand what you are trying to do, to dehumanise the pre-born so that it can be freely killed.

You reject the terms, child and baby, not because they are inaccurate but because you fear them, because they endow the pre-born with humanity and because then you have to justify killing human beings.

I have more respect for abortionists who acknowledge the humanity of that which they wish to kill but defend their actions on philosophical grounds.

As Dr Nathanson remarked on Justice Blackmun’s Roe v Wade majority opinion.

“Of course, I was pleased with Justice Harry Blackmun’s abortion decisions, which were an unbelievably sweeping triumph for our cause, far broader than our 1970 victory in New York or the advances since then. I was pleased with Blackmun’s conclusions, that is. I could not plumb the ethical or medical reasoning that had produced the conclusions. Our final victory had been propped up on a misreading of obstetrics, gynecology, and embryology, and that’s a dangerous way to win.”

The Clintons have shut down their charity now when all possiblity of her becoming President is gone, I wonder what we gave them over the years as Hillary received 88 million from the Australian government over 10 years for her charity and she got donations from those in Saudi Arabia that support Isis and were involved with the 911 attacks. She supports them and they send her donations and this is Saudi Arabia, everyone knows how they treat women there, how they support Isis and how they throw gays off the roof…

They poured hundreds of millions of dollars and tens, thousands of tonnes of weapons into anyone who would fight against Assad.”

These policies ended up helping militants linked to al-Qaeda and ultimately IS, he said.

Between the two of them Trump was the lesser of two evils but the fact is he is not a racist but the media has done a McCarthyism on him but he is pig ignorant with the subject of women.

In fact we can’t be angry at Trump as he was the outcome from years of what some call globalisation, others neoliberialism and others just pure corruption. A man came along and spoke in the same way as others who were fed up with the political bull and that is why people voted for him. As Hillary was hugging the very rich half naked celebs the unemployed and farmers of that country were wondering how all these actions from Hillary was going to provide money for them to pay their bills…
Hillary lost touched with the real people and went chasing fantasies in the entertainment business while Trump met real people, who can condemn Trump for this.
It was said that Trump represented everything wrong with American society while Hillary represented everything wrong with U.S. politics. All this anger at Trump is manufactured by the media who are based in strong Democratic regions who are pro Clinton still. The same areas that are rich, educated and not suffering like the areas that supported Trump, for these areas being so educated who were for Hillary then they really enjoy fake news and bitterness, even the media in these areas are that bitter they tried to poison as many wells on Trump as possible. What we can say about these pro Clinton areas is that they are spoilt rich brat areas who loose it when they can’t get their way and this leads to protest over Trump where these educated people destroy other peoples property? That says who they are?

So what was this piece about as the detail was missing and nothing specific was mentioned directly. Do we know yet what Trump will do?
We say how great Obamas was but the amount of attacks the police / cops have done on poor African American is through the roof even with the support of African American cops doing the harm to African American civiliand as well as to the homeless. Then the prison system in the US with 3 strikes and your jailed for life? What about war crimes and drone attacks on 7 countrieshttp://www.gq.com/story/drone-uav-pilot-assassination or even innocent prisoners in Gitmo http://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Murder-at-Camp-Delta/Joseph-Hickman/9781451650808
Was rendition a human right, was trade sanctions against Russia anything to do with human rights or was CETA, TPP, TTIP or TiSA Agreement where big companies would take governments to court for loss of money due to the laws of the country like labour, enviornmental or ecological. Human rights is a term used a lot but without detail it means nothing. If it is a term to use for abortion then how can abortion be a human right when the human rights of the father and the child itself is ignored, are they not human as well.
The rate of HIV in the southern US is out of control, I don’t think abortion cures that but poverity rules the US because the dollar is god and the US society is built on the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, that really kicked of with Reagan and has been growing since. Is poverty a human right as http://www.forbes.com/sites/maggiemcgrath/2016/01/06/63-of-americans-dont-have-enough-savings-to-cover-a-500-emergency/#b0311e76dde1
