Inside the 'paparazzi-proof' New York building where penthouses are selling for €50.5 million

Jennifer Lawrence was just one celebrity who showed interest.

IT IS COMMON practice for high-end condo buildings to tout all kinds of amenities to attract buyers.

But 443 Greenwich, a luxury building in the Tribeca neighbourhood of New York, claims to have an entirely different perk: it’s apparently “paparazzi proof”.

While the building’s management can’t comment on the identity of its residents, it has been reported that the building’s ”paparazzi-proof” architectural features — such as its lower-level parking and interior courtyard garden — have proved attractive to high-end clients who value their privacy.

Jennifer Lawrence reportedly looked into buying property there, and Mike Myers purchased a $14.65 million (€13.7 million) loft in the building earlier this month. However, just a week later, Myers put it back on the market with a slightly higher price of $15 million (€14.03 million).

According to real estate agents at Cantor-Pecorella, 66% of the units have been sold, and 50% are currently occupied. As for the eight penthouses, two are still available — one of which is listed for $27.5 million (€25.72 million), the other for $55 million (€51.43 million). Prices for the lofts range from $3.5 million to $14.5 million (€3.27 million to €13.56 million).

Built in 1882, the 443 Greenwich building was originally a book bindery. Today, it’s a landmarked building with 53 residential condominiums, including eight penthouses.

One of the building’s major privacy-geared benefits is its lower-level lobby and parking space, guarded by wrought-iron gates. The building has on-site valet parking.

The lobby has a view out to the courtyard garden.

Located in the centre of the building, this garden is a private, quiet space for residents.

Along with a fitness centre, there’s also a 75-foot lap pool.

Some of the penthouses have a private terrace along with their own pool.

Inside the seven-story building, lofts like this four-bedroom home range from 2,000 to 5,000 square feet. The penthouses range from 3,500 to 9,500 square feet. The six penthouses that have been sold ranged in price from $15 million to $54 million.

This really shouldn’t happen in this day and age in a modern western country

It shouldn’t but it can if a driver disobeys a signal inadvertently or not.

Some cab signal systems will stop the train in a situation like this, but the driver may be able to override it to some degree.

There might be no cab signalling, the system might be down.

This section of line is privately owed. And has no proper advance warning system it is run by station masters making phone calls to other stations to see if the single line is clear ,a very antiquated way of running a railway in this modern era but devastating when mistakes are made ,as we all can see ,I would reserve blaming anyone till the investigation is complete,

I remember my dad telling my that in the case of a train crash, the middle and second last carriages were always the least likely to de-rail. I always choose the second last carriage. Look at the picture.

Strange this points to a big signalling failure or driver error.

Or maybe one of the drivers had a stroke or seizure.

Good point Shawn but train’s like this would be fitted with a device called the Deadman pedal. A bell or buzzer with go off every so often and the driver with have to press pedal. If not the emergency brakes would kick in

It appears that telephone block signalling was used on this line, this is an antiquated system. See arnie reply above.

    http://www.railjournal.com/index.php/europe/at-least-20-dead-in-italian-collision.html?channel=537&utm_source=WhatCounts%2c+Publicaster+Edition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=RGN+7.13.16&utm_content=Full+Article

    Extract from article:
Ferrotramviaria’s 81km network is electrified at 3kV dc and includes 40km of single-track line. Track-doubling is underway on the section where the collision occurred and the line is still equipped with telephone block signalling. Last December the company had announced plans to install the Italian SCMT automatic train protection system on the Ruvo – Bitonto section of the Bari – Barletta line.
