Calls for Enda Kenny to cancel White House trip over Trump's refugee ban

The Green Party says Trump’s actions are “intolerable”, while Charlie Flanagan says the ban “concerns” him.

Updated 8pm

TheJournal.ie / YouTube

THERE HAVE BEEN calls for Taoiseach Enda Kenny to cancel his upcoming visit to the White House to mark St Patrick’s Day.

The issue has been raised on numerous occasions since Donald Trump was elected US President, but gained momentum this weekend following Trump’s attempt to stop refugees entering the US.

Today, the Greens called on Kenny to postpone the visit. Party leader Eamon Ryan said: “We have to stand up for what is right. The banning of refugees, the support for torture and the bullying of the Mexican government is simply intolerable.

We respect the US political system and value our historic connections but we cannot in all honesty hand over that bowl of shamrock in these circumstances.

“It is time for our Taoiseach to represent our country and what we stand for in the world. We should do so in a civil and diplomatic manner but proceeding as if everything is normal is not an option.”

Meanwhile, Labour leader Brendan Howlin said: ”For decades, Irish governments have been able to enjoy significant access to senior US politicians in the days around St Patrick’s Day. This has allowed us to raise issues that matter to Ireland, and to Irish people in the US.

That access is valuable, but it is not the only thing of value. Ireland is an open and tolerant nation. We believe that those who are experiencing violence and oppression in their home nations should be welcomed to nations that can provide them with safety and security and opportunity.

A spokesperson from the Taoiseach’s Department told TheJournal.ie: ”In order to maintain the historically strong links between the Irish and American peoples it is important that the Taoiseach continues to engage with the US President and his administration in Washington around the events of St Patrick’s Day.

Doing so allows the Taoiseach to outline, in person, his government’s views on a range of issues, including business and economic ties, immigration and other matters of common interest. He will continue to act in the interests of Irish people and to that end he will raise these matters again this year.

However, Howlin added: “President Trump does not share our values. Indeed, he is openly hostile to them. He and his team have made clear that he is unwilling to hear, or even listen to discordant voices. In that context, the only thing a visit by the Taoiseach to the White House could achieve would be to present Ireland as a supine supporter of Trumpism.

Such a presentation would be humiliating to the vast majority of Irish people who stand opposed to the policies being implemented by President Trump.

“Put plainly, if the Muslim ban remains in place, Enda Kenny should not be boarding a plane to Washington in March. And our government should be working might and mane to make sure that these policies are not enforced on Irish soil.”

Speaking on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics, Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar said it’s important for Ireland to “engage with the new administration”.

However, given the current political environment, he said the annual tradition “can’t just be smiles and shamrocks”.

At the time of publication, over 24,000 people had signed a petition calling on Kenny to cancel the visit. It is one of a number of online petitions on the issue.

Refugee ban

On Friday, Trump signed an executive order barring all refugees from entering the US for three months. Those from war-ravaged Syria were set to be banned from entering the country indefinitely.

Trump said the ban was necessary to prevent “radical Islamic terrorists” from entering the nation. The ban affects people from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

It led to people en route to the US being detained at airports, sparking several protests. Last night, a federal judge issued an emergency order temporarily barring the US from deporting people, saying travellers who had been detained had a strong argument their legal rights had been violated.

Some people are still being detained, with a lack of clarity about what will happen next.

Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan issued a statement about the issue today, saying: “While US immigration policy is a matter for the US authorities, it is clear that the most recent decisions could have far-reaching implications – both on humanitarian grounds and on relations between the US and the global Muslim community.

“Accordingly, I share the concerns of other EU partners regarding this most recent development.

Many people are feeling great concern about these changes including some Irish citizens in the United States. Our embassy in Washington and consulates remain in active and ongoing contact with Irish immigration centres throughout the US. I am conscious that matters are still evolving and that the US courts are now involved. We will continue to monitor developments in this area very closely.

“Ireland has a vibrant multinational community which contribute a great deal to our country.”

Speaking about Trump’s executive order, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: “This arbitrary ban and the refusal to offer sanctuary to refugees runs counter to international obligations, equality and decency. Generations of Irish fled starvation, poverty and conflict to make a new life and contribute to building America.

I congratulate the protesters at the airports last night and welcome the temporary stay on this unjust policy. I believe that the Irish government should not allow Irish airports to enforce this fundamentally unjust order.

In a statement from Anti-Austerity Alliance, Ruth Coppinger said: “Donald Trump’s executive order barring travel for those from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Syria is an openly racist act. It is targeted at Muslims predominantly, who have been consistently scapegoated and targeted by Trump.

It is heartening to see the scenes of thousands of people protest at airports at America, demanding that people are allowed in and in opposition to these policies. Last summer, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said Trump was racist and dangerous. This executive order now means the government has to decide which side it’s on.

“Will it show solidarity with Muslims who are the targets of this immigration policy or will it turn a blind eye and allow US pre-clearance to carry out racist discrimination in our airports?”

What do you think: Should Kenny cancel the trip?

I’m usually called a Leftie, Trot, Communist and all other kinds of things- I’m actually A Democratic Socialist (Scandinavian style)! I think Enda Kenny should go, I don’t like Trump, didn’t like Clinton and hoped Bernie Sanders would be President! Obama bombed the crap out of 8 countries and fuelled the Syrian refugee crisis, if they were going to boycott they should have started when Reagan took office and continued unabated til today! But the reality is we are dependent on the US for trade and a symbolic St Patricks day shamrock event does not give the expression of support for US butchering and dreadful foreign policy! Kenny is a Right wing numpty anyway- hopefully he will tell Trump how poorly this policy is in Ireland – but I wouldn’t hold my breath!!

@ Patrick Gough – No we shouldn’t and that’s my point! Bomber Harris was a war Criminal, so was Tony Blair and Bush- there is a thing called Diplomacy – while using diplomacy we should also raise concerns about current situations – it is a balancing act- we cannot afford to be isolated, but we should also raise human rights concerns and also listen to human rights concerns others may have about us!! The USA and Britain have been plundering and killinf for hundreds of years (I’m English by birth)- but they are also huge trading partners of Ireland – doesn’t mean turning a blind eye but also doesn’t mean Ireland should isolate itself! !

Trump doesn’t care about Ireland or how we depend on trade with the US. We should stand for our principles he will use the shamrock presentation as a photo opportunity and proof that the world agrees with him. Teresa Mays grovelling over the weekend was nausea inducing is not something I want to see Ireland or our representatives taking part in.

Enda’s hands are tied. He can’t risk isolating Ireland. Trump is attacking Ireland’s economy. He knows our business model.

Regarding this ban, wasn’t it United States in the first place who created all these problems and now Europe has to handle all the refugees. Unfair to Europe and also the refugees who are suffering due to US’s policies.

You are so right. I have always been proud, as an Irish born American citizen, to see the shAmrock presented. Not this year. It would be pandering to a right wing regime such as was seen in the 1930s in Europe. We, the Irish, must stand up for those experiencing now what our ancestors experienced. Let us not forget. If we do, we are denying those who forged the path throughout the world for us.

Within a few years Ireland will be isolated from mainland Europe more than it has for decades by Brexit, Ireland is in serious danger of becoming a forgotten outpost of the EU. So by all means, let us snub America, hack off their President and shoot ourselves in the head just to appease the Green Party.

    Exactly.

As others have pointed out – given all recent US Presidents have been involved in foreign wars, drone strikes, coups etc, its a bit hypocritical to suddenly decide this is a red line issue.

The value of the trip is not in meeting Trump – the real value lies with putting Ireland front and centre of US consciousness for a few days every March. I was over a few years ago – the trip receives blanket coverage on all US networks. It is extremely positive for the country. There are dozens of events held in all major cities. Some, like the American Ireland fund, raise huge sums for charity and are vital in keeping Ireland relevant and raising the country’s profile in a positive way.

The trouble when you keep going left is you end up going round in circles, and even end up driving up your own backside. you have got to right at some stage to move forward, and of course the opposite is also true. @Brinster: There’s nothing normal about the election of a megalomaniacal manchild to power, even in a polity as flawed as the USA. Were previous presidents hypocrites, spouting platitudes while imposing tyranny and unleashing terror?- You bet, in fact that’s the norm, but even the worst of them still lived in the real world defined by facts and scientific evidence, unlike the Despicable-in-Chief! So nobody, Enda Kenny, should attempt to conduct business as usual while he sits in the Oval Office. Would it hurt Irish interests to take a moral stance and boycott Trump; I doubt it, despite all the guff about ‘profile’ etc.- give me one hard proof that the shamrock-and-smiles gig has ever been anything but an ego trip, literally, any other time. And even if it did have a measurable cost, so what- Trump’s words and actions recall the start of the 1930s, let’s not follow the moderate fools of that time who let the monsters carry on-no appeasement, not in our name!

While I have absolutely no time for Kenny or his cabinet members (incl Shane Ross, who once again proves that the chief preoccupation of a TD and minister is political self-preservation), until the Irish public stops either taking election candidates at face value, or drops the ‘shrugs shoulders “What can we do” after doing effectively sweet F.A.’, then this kind of politician will continue regarding the public as mugs who’ll never peacfull force a change of political behaviour.

They betrayed everyone who voted for them just so they could get into power with the blueshirts. Yes thank god they are now destroyed and hopefully never get into power again. As for the SDLP I think its fair play to them for engaging with sf as who knows where we would be now if there had been no good Friday agreement.I dont go along with your assertion they have been committed political suicide.

Why are there so many Syrian refugees in the first place?

Because of US (and others) backed regime change policies – under Obama and Clinton.

How wrong is it to do what they did and then not take responsibility for the refugees that they created?

What I find hard to understand though is why so many “liberals” werent outraged by the Obama/Clinton regime change policies that caused at least the Syria and Lybia crises and all these refugees in the first place.

The kind of people this will affect include people like Mo Farah, who has a joint UK / Somalia nationality and currently lives in the US with his family – he will now not be able to go there to re-join his family.

We need to stop allowing tiny leftwing parties act as our conscience. I support President Trumps decision.

It has now been revealed that the 7 countries in the executive order were from an Obama admin list of the worst state sponsors of terrorism.

    https://mic.com/articles/166845/the-…on#.2RGqJztfhE

“…According to the draft copy of Trump’s executive order, the countries whose citizens are barred entirely from entering the United States is based on a bill that Obama signed into law in December 2015.

foreigners who would normally be deemed eligible for a visa waiver were denied if they had visited Iran, Syria, Sudan or Iraq in the past five years or held dual citizenship from one of those countries.

In February 2016, the Obama administration added Libya, Somali and Yemen to the list of countries one could not have visited

So, in a nutshell, Obama restricted visa waivers for those seven Muslim-majority countries — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen — and now, Trump is looking to bar immigration and visitors from the same list of countries.”

What Trump is doing is of an entirely different order than anything that has been done in the US before – that’s why even conservative Republicans are against him now.

Well, I think Inda should go. I think what Trump is doing is wrong. Not that he wants to strenghten America’s border but the simply the way he is doing it. It’s not as if Trump would take much notice of a protest from a tiny, powerless country that has based most of its economy on pulling in US companies and facilitating pretty much near a tax scam ( mind you a legal one, by all accounts ) for these same companies.
Kenny might as well go and see if he can salvage something from the shi.storm heading our way, forlorn hope that may be, with Kenny doing the talking and Trump not doing the listening.
If Ireland’s establishment wants to protest, do it through diplomatic channels and hope that Trump isn’t a sensitive mood, otherwise Ireland will be bombed out existence by late night Trumpisms on Twitter.

Adams the hypocrite has been to the White House several times when they let him but did he ever complain or mention the invasions of the muslim countries that caused the refugee crisis to Obama, Clinton or Bush.
Trump hopefully can put an end to the wars and then all the refugees can go back home and live happily ever after.

The latest executive order has nothing to do with Ireland.

If anything, our government should seek to reaffirm and even further strengthen our relationship with the US.

changes to the US Immigration system was only a matter of time, Trump is not wasting any time putting them in to action.

Enda takes his council not off the IRISH people whom elected him who he called at Davos. “What happened in our country is that people simply went mad with borrowing.” He is europes village idiot and a poodle of Merkel’s misery crusade of austerity and migration. When trump is well aware he called Trump racist and dangerous remarks will be commented by. By all accounts that if Trumps makes an enemy in business your screwed. Ireland has issued a bowl of shamrocks to every new president to remind rhem.kf the far reaching history between the nations. By not offering it and showi g up all business they can discuss what needs to be discussed like “businessmen” with an unfreindly undertow. Its the equivalent of pulling your hand away last minute before a handshake and brushing your hair back instead.

(possibly ) the most frustrating thing is that decades of U.S. and superpower imperialism is in fact responsible for so much chaos. Isis’ creation can actually be traced back to the invasion by Russia in Afghanistan and the Mujahideen but following further unsupported invasions in sovereign states in the middle east and the election of Trump we seem to find ourselves at a crossroads in the west with all of this. I don’t support a specific ban.from the aforementioned countries but equally I don’t support the west in bed with the evil Saudi Arabia or even Turkey the way it’s going under Erdogan. One thing’s for sure right now ,ironically USA should already be taking all these current migrants because they are already so responsible under Clinton Bush Obama and now under Trump.oh yeah and that’s how much we should care about Kenny over in the states – some perspective.

“According to a report on CNN recently, the dear little shamrocks go straight to the crusher.

That is as in the wood chipper, exterminator, shredder or whatever torture implement the White House uses.

Uhuh. That little bowl of shamrock, the “enduring symbol” of the relationship between Ireland and the US, is destroyed after making the long trip from Ireland.

Chewed up, spit out, never existed.

    What shamrock?

Gone, no sign, same as in no US Ambassador to Ireland currently.

CNN says White House security protocol dictates that any “food, drink or plant presented to the president be ‘handled pursuant to Secret Service policy’.”

As CNN points out that’s “Secret Service-speak for destroyed.”

How cruel. Call it what it is – the Massacre of the Shamrocks.”

Never mind that US vultures have us by the shorts & curlies compliments of NAMA, & that we have growing homeless numbers, a failed HSE, an avaricious public service ,whilst the shamrock contingent live it up in the USA for a few days.
Shure maybe we might even sign up to be the next state of the Union, so that their military can continue to invade hitherto exploited states who dare to stand up for themselves.
Shure hasn’t the stars’n stripes replaced the starry plough over Dublin already.
