TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY has said that he will still visit the White House for his annual St Patrick’s Day trip to Washington, despite calls for him to cancel the meeting with President Donald Trump.
Kenny faced numerous calls to cancel the trip, in the wake of Trump’s steps to temporarily ban travellers from certain predominantly-Muslim countries.
The meeting will give Kenny the chance to “outline, in person, his Government’s views on a range of issues, including business and economic ties, immigration and other matters of common interest”, according to a spokesperson for the Taoiseach
The statement adds that the Taoiseach will “continue to act in the interests of Irish people and to that end he will raise these matters again this year”.
Labour leader Brendan Howlin, meanwhile, has said that “the only thing a visit by the Taoiseach to the White House could achieve would be to present Ireland as a supine supporter for Donald Trump”.
