Woman attacked in south Dublin estate was victim of sexual assault

The woman was attacked yesterday evening.

GARDAÍ HAVE APPEALED for witnesses after a woman was a victim of a sexual assault yesterday evening in a south Dublin estate.

The woman was attacked yesterday evening at about 5.45pm in the Bayview Estate in Killiney.

Gardaí said that a lone man approached the woman and attacked her.

The woman managed to fight back against the man and struck him a number of times. She then contacted gardaí where she reported the crime. She suffered minor injuries.

Gardai in Shankill have set up an incident room to investigate this incident.

They have confirmed that a number of statements have been taken and numerous lines of inquiry are being investigated together with CCTV and house to house inquiries.

Commenting on the attack, local councillor Cormac Devlin said he had asked gardaí to step up patrols in the area as a result.

“This is the second serious incident in the Killiney area this year,” said Devlin.

“In light of these incidents, I have asked council management to review lighting in the Killiney and Shankill area to ensure it is fit for purpose.

I have also asked Garda management to step up patrols, particularly mountain bike patrols around Killiney Hill and the adjacent DART stations.

Gardaí are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Shankill Station on 01-6665900 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111.

How awful for the poor woman. Probably coming home from work. Hope she is ok and the b*stard is arrested before anyone else gets hurt.

@niamh ryan: It’s weird that they didn’t. Here’s the description of the guy who attacked a few women last year around the same area; he was never caught.

The young woman described the man as wearing a short, black puffy jacket. He had “dark, greyish hair and blue eyes”.
He was approximately 5”10 in height and had a Dublin accent.

@niamh ryan: Yeah it’s not exactly helpful to anyone who might live in the area and want to avoid him. Or anyone who might recognize him from a description and have information to give the Guards. How can they not even have a rough height and build description.

@niamh ryan: Garda were critiscised last year for failing to release a description, and there were more attacks that could have been averted. You couldn’t make it up, talk about history repeating itself. Hopefully he’ll be caught.

You would assume because she was able to fight him off she would have been able to get a decent look at him

@Daniel Bohan: how do you know the Garda even have a description to release? The woman could be so traumatised that she has not yet given one or can’t. Maybe the description is so poor and lacking detail that the Garda won’t release it. Maybe it is very accurate and describes a piece of clothing so well that if they release details then the culprit will dispose of this item.

But well done you, Sherlock Homes, for being all knowing and for figuring out the Garda have one but have not released it.

@Lisa Saputo: No Lisa, I’m not. If you actually read what I posted, I said it sounds similar to an attacker from last year, and provided same description. The guy was never caught. If it is the same person, then people have a description. If it’s not the same person, I’ve provided a description for a rapist who has never been caught. Where’s the harm?

With the stretch in the evening coming in it would have still been bright at that point. Goes to show how audacious it was on the one hand, but hopefully she got a good look at him and can ID him.

Sounds like the same lad who attacked a few women in Shankill last year. They improved the footpaths and lighting and I think they stopped. This area is 1km or less from where they happened.

Maybe they haven’t got one yet. It’s just as irresponsible to release an unconfirmed description as it would to not release one.

These attacks not only have a dreadful impact on the survivor but the whole community in which the attack takes places. The fear and doubt it puts into other local women in the area is so unfair by these attackers. They don’t just get off on the attack but the aftermath of the attack and the whole terror that covers the area. Thanks to this pervert some woman won’t go for her run tonight or some woman will be getting a taxi instead of walking.

I walk the area every night and there was not a Garda car in sight this evening! Would it not be a good idea for Garda to have some presence in the area after such a serious incident?? As for Councellor Devlin’s statement, less talk and more action would be appreciated. I am not usually one for bashing politicians but this just seems to be a case of wanting to be seen to be doing something as opposed to actually doing it.
