1. #MURDER: Gardaí have arrested a 29-year-old man in relation to the murder of a 74-year-old man at a retirement flat in Kimmage, Dublin yesterday. The victim was found in his bed after he was stabbed in the chest and the flat set on fire.
2. #ALCOHOL: The cost of the cheapest cans of lager is set to double soon, while own-brand vodka could become €4 more expensive as the Government plans to ban the selling of cut-price booze in a bid to stop teenage and problem drinking, the Sunday Times reports.
3. #PRIORY HALL: Dublin City Council may offer 100 Priory Hall residents €50,000 to buy their substandard properties from which they have been evicted because of safety concerns. According to the Sunday Business Post, a second proposal of a ten-year rental programme is also being considered.
4. #PROPERTY: Obtaining a mortgage is more difficult now than in previous years but some people are getting around this by paying for their houses with cash. The Sunday Independent claims a new trend has emerged with up to one in four property purchases being made with just cash. Who has this type of money? Expats, foreigners and retired couples are the most common buyers.
5. #NEW ZEALAND: A cargo ship off the coast of New Zealand has split in two, spilling its containers and other contents into the sea. The vessel ran aground three months ago, leading to a large oil leak, reports BBC. There are fears now that more oil will be released on shore, again affecting wildlife in the area.
6. #IRAN: A government official in Iran has told Iranian media that the country’s underground uranium enrichment facility will soon be operational. Tehran insists that the nuclear plant is for generating power and not bombs as the US claims, reports Reuters.
7. #ARREST: Merseyside Police have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of a racially-aggravated public order offence following an incident at a match between Liverpool FC and Oldham on Friday. The man is being questioned over remarks allegedly made to Oldham defender Tom Adeyemi.
8. #OOPS: It’s been a week of gaffes for British MPs and the Prime Minister himself is the latest to offer his apologies for an ill-advised remark. Downing Street said his comment likening Ed Balls’s Commons heckling to that of someone with Tourette’s Syndrome was an “off-the-cuff” comment that was not intended to offend.
9. #BOD’S WORD: Out of action with a shoulder injury for the next few months, Irish rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll isn’t resting on his laurels. Instead he is starting work on his autobiography which Penguin Ireland has just won the rights for, according to the Sunday Times. The publisher has not revealed how much it paid for the Leinster player’s story but other rugby stars have earned advances of more than €100,000.
