TWO WOMEN HAVE died in separate road collisions this morning.

A female cyclist in her mid-30s collided with a car at about 11am this morning in Co Kildare.

The fatal collision happened on the Rathcoffey to Maynooth Road at Clane. The male driver of the car, who is aged in his late 20s, was uninjured.

The woman’s body has since been removed to Naas General Hospital.

The stretch of road was closed to facilitate a Garda forensic examination, but has since reopened.

Earlier this morning, a woman aged in her 50s died after she was involved in a single vehicle crash in rural Galway.

Gardaí said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred at Lisdeligny on the Killimor to Kiltormer Road near Portumna this morning at around 8.30am.

The woman died when the car she was driving left the road and struck a tree. She was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at scene. Her body was removed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

A Garda spokesman said: “The road is currently closed to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators. Diversions are in place”.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the Killimor to Kiltormer Road, Portumna between 7.30am and 9.30am this morning to contact them at Loughrea garda station on 091 842870, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666111, or any Garda station.

Not another road fatality, there seems to be no end to them this year alone. May she rest in peace and thoughts go out to her family, friends and loved ones.

The incident happened on a bend and the main cause of road deaths in Ireland is speeding. There is a high probability that speed was the cause.

@Brian Heffernan that accident didn’t happen at a bend. Don’t act like you know the facts if you don’t

As someone who knew the deceased I find your comments inflammatory, insulting to the deceased lady and unnecessary. Until the exact cause has been established it might be wise to keep the speculation to yourself. Her friends and family don’t need you laying blame at her door and accusing her of speeding at this time.

Absolutely outrageous that the same bunch of keyboard warriors concentrate on expressing their opinion on what “may possibly probably” could of happened.
And then their opposite numbers castigating them for their observations.
And all the while they lose sight of the actual story here that another precious life has passed and the devastating repercussions rebound amongst family friends and the community.
But as long as the journal regulars get to voice their sad opinions life goes on….
Embarrassing for me to have to read these comments in the knowledge that family friends colleagues and acquaintances of the recently deceased are possibly reading them in their time of loss.
