Watch: Motorists warned to stay away from Sally Gap due to snowy conditions

The road is currently impassable.

TheJournal.ie / YouTube

THE SALLY GAP is impassable this afternoon due to freezing conditions on the treacherous stretch of road.

AA Roadwatch captured the footage above earlier this morning in the Wicklow Mountains, showing the snow and ice left by sub-zero temperatures overnight.

Motorists are being advised to use an alternative route.

The stretch was also impassable on Saturday, with Wicklow News reporting that recovery services were called out several times on Sunday to rescue stranded vehicles.

While caution will need to be exercised in the area over the coming days, temperatures are due to recover somewhat this week after a cold weekend.

Met Éireann is forecasting lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees overnight.

The weather is also causing problems for walkers this afternoon.

The Coast Guard is advising members of the public to avoid piers and other exposed seafront areas this afternoon due to strong gales.

“Waves can be unpredictable,” spokesperson Fergus Cooney said, “A lull of 10 minutes can be followed by intense waves powerful enough to knock you over and cause injury or wash you off the pier wall.”

When seeing headlines like “Roads impassable” alongside a photo of three snowflakes and enough ice to barely chill a gin and tonic somewhere in Ireland always wonder what do Finns and Norwegians and Swedes, Germans and Russians Canadians Alaskans and the inhabitants of most other US States north of Galveston think of us for a shower of wusses.

Seriously , the AA man in his 2wd transit made it up. Hardly impassable. Maybe it should be described as unsuitable for sh!te drivers…….
