Woman left 'bruised and shaken' after refusing to give handbag to hammer-wielding mugger

The mugger fled down a side street empty handed.

DETECTIVES IN NORTHERN Ireland are trying to track down a man who attacked a woman with a hammer and tried to steal her handbag in the Lisburn Road area of south Belfast.

Shortly after 11pm last night, the woman was assaulted outside a restaurant.

He attempted to take her handbag but she refused to hand it over.

He struck her a number of times with the hammer on the arm before he made off empty handed along Lower Windsor Avenue.

A PSNI statement said that the woman “suffered bruising to her arm and was left badly shaken following the incident”.

They are now searching for the attacker. He is described as being around 5’6′ tall. He was wearing a grey hooded top, blue jeans and a dark coloured baseball cap.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has any other information, is urged to contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station in Belfast.
