Dealers using Irish courier firms to safely ferry drugs to customers

Revenue officer Liam Peakin warned about the rise in the trade.

DRUG DEALERS SOURCING their stock online are using intermediary delivery firms to transport their wares.

Revenue has said that, as the demand for drugs rises, so too do the number of attempts to bring them in using new methods.

While attempting to smuggle drugs using the postal service is nothing new, dealers are now starting to use third-party parcel storage delivery firms to move their goods.

Liam Peakin, who is manager in Customs Drugs Law Enforcement in the Revenue Investigations & Prosecutions Division, said the practice is becoming more and more prevalent despite an increase in detections.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, he said: “The internet drug market is a challenging for us and for the gardaí. There has been a huge increase in the amount of people who are going online looking for illegal drugs.

“Are we going to beat this? I don’t think so.”

Despite the rising number of people trying to bring in drugs into Ireland, Peakin said there are certain tell-tale signs which tip-off Revenue and mail sorters to packages which potentially contain illegal products

“If it’s coming from a particular source then we might have a closer look. Also, there would be a commonality of packaging. So we’d hear of specific ways drugs have been packaged and then look out for that.”

Illicit drugs purchased via the dark web or so-called legal highs which are legal in certain jurisdictions are being shipped nationwide.

When asked about dealers and customers using courier services to transport drugs, Peakin added that it is something which he is seeing more and more of.

“That is another means of delivery, alright. It’s an extension of the postal service. But what you have here is another strand. It’s difficult to police at times. You’d have to have surveillance on petrol stations and different vans. To police it requires a lot of resources and it’s sometimes difficult to persuade people to give them to you.

TheJournal.ie has contacted a number of delivery firms to get a statement on each firm’s delivery protocols. There was no response by time of publication.

The only problem that would come with this is that the greedy goverment will put a ridiculous price tag on it and then the demand from “illegal” supply will still be there to buy cheaper therefore all your doing encouraging it be bought cheaper. Just like cigarettes, the tax is that high look what they sell for on the black market. I agree with legalising soft drugs but they need to keep the price realistic or those that are now, will still be creaming off the sale and supply and all the government will have done away with is gardai paperwork on cannabis hauls.

There is far too much demand to stop it, there will always be new inventive ways that will slip through. Millions seized lately, yet has had no effect on supply.

Face reality and make soft drugs legal, believing you can prevent them shows how far removed you are from reality.

The funding should aim to help people deal with health issues, not ruin lives and careers by kicking down doors or intercepting someones personal supplies.

If weed is seized by customs you get a letter in the post advising that a suspicious package with your name on it has been seized and if you want to claim it do so and accept responsibility. If you don’t try claim it there is no further action. It beats dealing with dealers, and as I say, in over 10 years I’ve never had a package stopped. All for personal use by the way, in case anyone’s wondering.

Don’t buy medications online using normal postage, they’ll be confiscated. You’re better off going to a GP and paying €50. The system is very conservative. It doesn’t trust people to order medications they need themselves online.

Hardly news in fairness, unless you live in a cave. Spoke to a lady recently who told me doctors, guards and solicitors often in her rehab unit in Cork. Not news to me but to many it is, can be amazing how naive some are to drugs and drug abuse.
Good example is people who abuse perscription drugs like benzos. To them it isnt or cant be drug abuse or addiction because its prescribed!! Chronic addicts many of them.
