Happy Pear pesto batches recalled for containing egg

The Happy Pear says the egg was undeclared because of a labelling error.

Happy Pear basil pesto FSAI FSAI

CERTAIN BATCHES OF The Happy Pear’s basil pesto is being recalled because they were found to contain ‘undeclared egg’.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland ruled that having egg in the pesto without including it on the list of ingredients on the label could be unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of egg.

The Happy Pear, a vegan and vegetarian retailer and restaurant, is recalling the affected batches of its ‘Lovely Basil Pesto’.

“We can confirm that a voluntary recall of The Happy Pear Lovely Basil Pesto has been initiated because a very small number of tubs have been incorrectly labelled.

The product has been withdrawn from sale because it contains a trace amount of egg and may be a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg. The product is perfectly safe for all other consumers.

The Happy Pear are asking customers who have bought this product – and have an allergy or intolerance to egg – not to eat it, and to return it to the store from where it was purchased.

If you have bought this brand of pesto, the products with the batch codes 7030, 7033, 7037, 7039 and 7044 contain the ‘undeclared egg’ and shouldn’t be eaten if you have an egg allergy or intolerance.

The Happy Pear say that none of their other products or basil pesto date codes are affected.

“We are treating this matter very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation,” said a spokesperson for the Happy Pear.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and will ensure this doesn’t happen again. If any customer would like any further information please contact The Happy Pear.”
