A MAN HAS been jailed for six years for the possession of nearly €1.7 million worth of cannabis which was hidden in a consignment of vintage clothing.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard on Friday that a customs officer at Highland Shipping in Finglas examined the pallet of clothing and found it contained 115 packets of the drug weighing nearly 84kg.
Gardaí were alerted and a decision was made to repackage the clothes and allow the owner to collect them.
On 26 June 2015, Dean McCarthy drove a transit van into the business park and collected the pallet as undercover gardaí looked on. He drove the van to a pub car park where he handed the keys to another man.
McCarthy got in a Mercedes car and drove home as the other man drove the van to Balbutcher Lane in Ballymun. There, gardaí moved in on the van causing the driver to flee, leaving the van behind him.
That evening, McCarthy, who was still under surveillance, went out for dinner with his partner and was observed driving slowly by Balbutcher Lane and looking at the abandoned van. He was arrested later that night.
In interview he said he didn’t know what was in the pallet of clothing. The court heard the pallet was addressed to his partner but that she has not been charged with any offence.
Detective Garda Eamon Tighe told prosecuting counsel, Garret Baker BL, he didn’t believe McCarthy knew the pallet contained so much cannabis. He said McCarthy has 12 previous convictions for minor offences.

McCarthy (26) of Finnebar Square, Finglas pleaded guilty to possession of €1.674 million of cannabis in Finglas 26 on June 2015.
Defence counsel, Caroline Biggs SC, said McCarthy was being used by others to “do the dirty work”.
She said her client took part in the offence to pay off a debt his partner had run up. Counsel said McCarthy understood the seriousness of his offence and that his family were living a nightmare because of it.
Sentencing McCarthy to six years in jail, Judge Melanie Greally said he played a “limited though responsible role” in the offence.
She accepted he didn’t have “precise knowledge of the amount of drugs involved” and that his role was limited to collecting the drugs for onwards movement.
The judge took into account several mitigating factors including McCarthy’s early guilty plea, his lack of significant previous convictions, his good employment record and family support.
She noted he had a difficult upbringing, with his mother suffering from drug addiction and his father dying by suicide.

Couldn’t care less about thumbs. The sense of outrage about everything in this country is wearing thin. We have become obsessed with what a few people earn while ignoring the fact that billions are spent every year from the public purse with no investigation or debate by the PAC.
They have no interest, for example, in investigating how a man with a wife and two children gets almost 22,000 euro a year in direct financial aid and therefore simply cannot take a job that pays less than that after tax.
They have nothing to say about a health budget of 20 billion that still isn’t enough to run the show apparently.
But sure let’s investigate the earnings of a few people. Bread and Circuses for the peasants while the real shame goes uninvestigated and unreported.

As a taxpayer I would like to know what this involved and if it was a proper use of funds? I would also like to know how it was treated for tax purposes given that the company would not be filing an annual return. He should answer all of this before the committee charged with making sure funds are spent correctly.

The information held by Rehab about an individuals income and pension details is non disclosable under the Data Protection Act. Would you want or demand that Rehab or the PAC breaks the law? What a strange viewpoint.
My (and I’m sure most other people’s) understanding would be that, as a largely State (taxpayer) funded charity with charitable status, the PAC has every right to know the renumeration package of the REHAB or any other similar State funded entity retirees even if they have left when the awkward questions began to be asked.
It’s immaterial that a portion of their turnover came from private sources, the fact is they were recipients of State funding and as such are subject to State scutiny. I’m quite sure their pensions and retirement packages are based on public service pension norms and largely funded by the State.
Kevin’s and Flannery should be arrested and forced to appear before the committee and answer all questions honestly.

When will The Government appoint a Regulator for Charities?
Compelling people, even cronies, to appear before government committees would be yet another step toward tyranny. If they have done something wrong they should appear before a judge. If the law is inadequate Kenny and Shatter should, as lawmakers, explain their negligence in this regard and when they are going to tender their resignations.
A regulator for charities isn’t likely to be much more effective than a regulator for banking. It would be preferable if we had a more discerning and prudent government and a more effective regulator of government profligacy.

I think the PAC serves a great purpose but I also think it has now become too politicised. Ross and McDonald in particular – it seems the only way they can get themselves in the papers these days is by means of whatever they say in the PAC. So let the PAC continue but replace the members, just to make sure the committee doesn’t become a political spring board for some TDs who otherwise might be irrelevant.

Funding should be stopped immediately to rehab and it should be made clear that not a cent of tax payers money is contributed to their pensions. There is no funding of Rehab by the State as you amusingly describe it. If you had bothered to examine the facts you would have uncovered the fact that these monies were provided to Rehab on the basis of a competitive tender and thus were contractually earned. If no further monies were to be paid and the contract was still in situ the State would be in some considerable difficulty!

Let’s face it, Angela was only ever a face, no ability, who supposedly fronts an organisation that can only return €9000 on €4m lotto ticket sales. This was with an average contribution of €83m from public coffers each year. I feel appalled and angered that such excess is allowed by the fat cats (literally Angela) when we have been exposed to such corruption. The fact that she and Flannery decided to not face the PAC is a slap in the face to every decent tax paying Irish citizen. There is still an idea persisting amongst the appointed and elected that it’s a “club” that once a member, let’s enjoy and forget the promises we initially made. What is it about the Irish (myself included), that tolerates this continually. Once we ourselves work hard and have enough, we put up. Just remember that probably 90% of you on here are less than 30 years of age and less than 10% of your age group will bother your asses to vote .Me thinkd you should concentrate your efforts else where if you.want serious.change …IE go out and canvas your ideas to humans rather than to.key pads ….

It is a great pleasure to inform you that I am a very loving Grandmother …. and I have no interest in canvassing for any political party …..I dislike wrong doing, but like myself these people are human and when we do wrong we should have the humility to stand up and admit it……….. Why does Sorry seem to be the hardest word to say….we all can be wrong it’s how we learn after all ……….as the saying goes he who made no mistakes……
Please encourage people who are supposed to protect the vulnerable in our community to do so honestly…………… Also I always go and vote out of respect for the generations who fought so hard in order for my privilege to vote and I always encourage others to do so…… The quality of the parties available at the moment is shameful Rottens eggs can be found throughout Dáil Éireann

Interesting where is my first post ? pray don’t tell me I have been censored now that would be a first! By the way I wonder if Ms Kierns will have to send in sick certificates ? Will she have to meet up Social Welfare Doctors…… I suppose she can always go to her Community Welfare Officer..With such a hard neck I wouldn’t be surprised ……out for six months at least ……guess whose paying for her Sick leave????
