Public asked to lay flowers at graves of Magdalene women today

Over 1,600 women are buried in cemeteries around the country, many of whom are in unmarked graves.

THE JUSTICE FOR Magdalenes Research (JFMR) group has called on members of the public to lay flowers at the graves of Magdalene women today.

Events to mark the sixth annual Flowers for Magdalenes commemoration will take place at various locations around the country where Magdalene Laundries operated.

JFMR noted there are at least 1,663 former Magdalene women buried in cemeteries in Ireland, many of whom are in unmarked graves.

In a statement the group said: “This year’s Flowers for Magdalenes events hold particular significance as new property developments are planned on three former Magdalene Laundry sites at Donnybrook, Sean McDermott Street and Sunday’s Well.”

Tuam

The event is also likely to have an added significance given the revelation on Friday that a significant number of human remains were found in what appears to be a decommissioned sewage chamber at the former site of a mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway.

JFMR wants a memorial for the women to be established, as recommended in the Magdalene Commission Report.

No memorial should ever act as a means to draw a line under an issue – particularly one which remains contested – but we recognise that for some survivors, a gesture which honours their lives will mean a great deal.

Through the Magdalene Names Project, JFMR is attempting to collate a complete list of names of women who died within the laundries so the group can commemorate the women with headstones.

Details about the events being held today – in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Wexford and Waterford – can be read here.

@John kavanagh: while there is a delay in the reporting of deaths as the legal requirement is three months, many are reported a lot faster but hardly ever a one day turn around. You have raised an interesting point though and the question needs to be asked, many of the deaths with covid-19 were not in ICU or even in hospital and I suspect that this was because the underlying condition did not require ICU and breathing intervention or the patient was assessed too ill to recover. It is a sad debate but long time before covid-19, sometimes older people in particular, do not get to ICU before they pass away as ICU had nothing to offer them

I would have thought when this started that all serious cases with covid-19 would be in hospital and ICU but as I watched the stats from day to day I realised that many were simply not in hospital (for as many different reasons as there were people).

RIP to those who have passed and a sepedy and complete recovery to those still affected.

Or the numbers of people around the world who die daily because of decisions governments make. We have to get on with our lives and ensure we protect the most vulnerable pple in society – the small minority who are at risk of dying. When people see new cases they panic and gleefully start fear mongering / finger pointing instead of being pragmatic and putting it in tyr bigger picture.

@Darrell Mc Cormack: The coronavirus causes inflammation in many organs including the heart, it also causes far more coagulation of the blood and thus raises the blood pressure. Combine inflammation of the heart with raised blood pressure and you are at serious risk of heart attack. If he was otherwise healthy as you state, but tested positive for covid19, then that is the most likley cause of the heart attack. He may even have had a heart condition that hadn’t been picked up, raising his risk again.

@Darrell Mc Cormack: Darrell, if the person was fit and healthy then they would not have died from a heart attack. There was obviously, underlying heath issues which were undiagnosed and I doubt a death certificate could include covid 19 as a cause of death unless the person was tested and was positive for same. If this was a sudden death then the post mortem will confirm, not all people with the virus are in hospital but for the wider family , they would need to be tested.

@Darrell Mc Cormack: Only cause I have read as much as I can about it…

    1. Did the death cert say exclusively covid-19 or just include covid-19 as the cause of death. To explain, when someone gets the flu and then pneumonia flu is included in the cause of death. Likewise if someone gets covid-19 and then pneumonia then covid-19 is included in the cause of death – The journal have an explainer article on this.

    2. Lung disease can affect the efficiently of gas exchange and eve cause the heard to work harder to try to get oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out. People with serious emphysema will be aware of that. So eventually the right hand side of the heart muscle grows to a dangerous point. A lung infection (any) can reduce the gas exchange area, resulting in extra stress on the already damaged heart until there is heart failure… so a chain of events can least to a heart attach or failure as the immediate cause of death but only because it is at the end of a chain of events and this is why covid-19 (flu, pneumonia, etc.) should be included on a death cert cert when a person dies with an active covid-19 infection unless there is a definitive unrelated cause.

My I, with respect, suggest that if this is an issue then the death certifying doctor should be approached and have the record corrected – we do see cases being de-notified and maybe this is the reason why – but the bottom line on this is that if someone gets covid-19 and dies rather than recovering this fact is usually recorded on the death cert and quite correctly.

Many other stats on CSO website for those who love to crunch the numbers cowering in their bunkers. 20 odd new cases an panic starts. Why do they not say these cases have already been isolated and are connected to previous positives. Are they to be hospitalised or are they positives without any treatment required. And what’s the point 2 metres social distance outside a shop but inside anything goes.
