Accidents do happen… but to make the decision to speed off instead of calling emergency services and remain at the scene, for someone in need of urgent medical care… is what makes this driver a complete coward lowlife.

I think the fact that the car was abandoned means that it was most likely a stolen vehicle. So yes. Utter lowlife.

Someone’s getting an unexpected knock on the door that’s what they think. An animal doesn’t do something like this. I hope they catch whoever it was and give them 10 years to think about there rotten actions.

Why would you drive off? Even just to ring up with a crappy voice and say ‘I knocked a fella down around Artane’, simple job done. That phone call could be the difference between that person seeing there family again and them not.

If your caught, your making things much worse for yourself, (if that’s possible at all) you’d more than likely get a suspended sentence and a ban if you stayed there in a stolen car. With driving off your looking at 3 years inside with a ban (maybe less, I think a guy recently got 1 year). What’s the point in driving off honestly, I wouldn’t fear the justice system in this country.

@OnTheOutside: Here’s what really happens to multiple banned, no licence, no insurance, ‘I don’t give a f**k’ hit and run lowlifes in the Irish self serving ‘justice’ system. Note the total disregard for the road traffic act, the ‘difficult upbringing’ the multiple previous convictions, the remorse, Oh! God the remorse, the never ending feeling of ‘guilt and shame’ and thus the draconian two and a half years of a sentence. The so called judge should have gotten at least that for such a despicable decision. http://www.thejournal.ie/eugene-maher-death-two-year-sentence-2841528-Jun2016/

Spot on Pat. I’m dreading the sentence. If the culprit is found.

Tragic for this poor man and Family. Not the first hit and run in the Artane / Coolock area over the years. So much tragedy caused by these low lives, there should be a mandatory 10 year for this type of crime !

Was this guy jogging on the road or did the van drive up on one of the footpaths?

@dearg doom: well given the outcome, I don’t think it matters. It’s not as if a pedestrian becomes fair game once they stray onto a residential road.

Either way the driver is at fault. You’re missing the point.

@dearg doom: It’s a simple question but lets not bother about the details, lets all just be outraged.!!!! sick of these people!!! dearg doom if the pic is anything to go by, driving up on the path would have been difficult because of the parked cars at that hour of the night. Also there was no mention of it hitting another vehicle which you’d expect it would do. My guess is the man was on the road. (which is not me saying it was his fault) Really hope he makes a full recovery.

Awful to hear, as a runner I know all to well that even on footpaths you are not safe from people driving out of driveways at speed and never looking for pedestrians coming, hope there is a full recovery.
