'The colour of hope': Tomb of Jesus restored to former glory in time for Easter visitors

THE NEWLY RESTORED shrine surrounding what is believed to be Jesus’s tomb was unveiled at a ceremony in Jerusalem yesterday following months of delicate work and in time for crowds of Easter visitors.

Religious leaders in traditional robes addressed a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried.

They stood in front of the ornate 19th-century edicule surrounding the tomb, its onion-shaped dome above, as hymns were sung.

Dignitaries including Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, considered the spiritual head of Orthodox church leaders, were in attendance.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, in his address to the ceremony, called the restoration “not only a gift to our Holy Land but to the whole world.”

“For the first time in over two centuries, this sacred edicule has been restored,” he said, referring to the shrine completed in 1810 surrounding the tomb.

Father Francesco Patton, who as custos of the Holy Land oversees sacred sites in the region, called it the “restoration of the most important site for all Christianity.”

The shrine is a key part of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Centuries of candle smoke and visiting pilgrims had left it discoloured and almost black.

Parts were also coming loose, with warnings that it was structurally unsound and posed a risk to the millions of pilgrims who visit every year.

‘The colour of hope’

Following a €3.4 million renovation led by the church’s three main Christian denominations, the tomb has been painstakingly restored to its former glory — including a warm reddish-yellow colouring.

“Before this the monument was black,” chief renovator Antonia Moropoulou told AFP.

This is the actual colour of the monument, the colour of hope.

Unlike other parts of the church, which were renovated between the 1960s and 1990s, the edicule had been neglected.

Moropoulou said restorers systematically dismantled, cleaned and renovated almost all of the edicule, including the columns and upper and inner domes.

A window has been installed to allow pilgrims to see the bare stone of the ancient burial cave for the first time.

The new structural integrity means a protective cage installed 70 years ago by the British is no longer necessary.

“The deformations of the holy edicule are addressed and the structural integrity is assured,” Moropoulou said.

Dramatic moment

In October, perhaps the most dramatic moment in the renovation occurred when the cave thought to be the tomb of Jesus was opened for the first time in centuries.

Marble slabs were removed to allow for the chamber’s reinforcement.

They found a top slab dating from the era of the Crusades, indicating that the tomb had not been opened for 700 years, Moropoulou said.

Underneath they found another from the era of Constantine the Great, the emperor who began the Roman empire’s transition to Christianity in the fourth century AD.

National Geographic / YouTube

“When we opened the slabs we discovered within the internal masonry all the layers of history — from Constantinian to Byzantine, to Crusaders to Renaissance,” Moropoulou said.

Whether the site is indeed the place of Jesus’s burial has long been a matter of dispute.

Some Christians believe he was buried in the Garden Tomb, outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City, but Moropoulou said their findings supported the Sepulchre as the location.

Asked if the slabs supported the argument that Jesus was buried there, she said it was “not a matter of an argument”.

It is a matter of revealing a tomb which is alive and which is influencing us working here and all the world.

The work is not the end of plans to renovate the church, located in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians see as the capital of their future state.

Aghoyan said they have “tentative” plans to fix the basement of the edicule as well as the “entire floor of the church”.

Such work would require around $6 million.

The Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic denominations share custody of the church, but disputes between the three have led to renovations being delayed for decades.

The shrine was briefly closed by Israeli authorities in 2015 over safety fears.

Samuel Aghoyan, the superior of the Armenian Church at the Sepulchre, admitted there were tensions between the churches at times.

“We are not in love with each but we love each other,” he said with a smile.

An artificially elaborate tomb for the son of a simple carpenter who hadn’t a washer or just another unrealistic representation of the Churches delusional ego?

Well, well, well, using an empirical ‘God delusion’ term which is the Royal Society version of Brexit for spirituality. I have to laugh at people and especially Irish people being so naive in following convictions they barely understand.

Spirituality or the ability to be inspired lights up information so that a person knows what is truth or lies as they naturally feel uncomfortable with doctrines which diminish human nature. The ‘God delusion’ crowd come from a doctrine (originally proposed by Darwin via Wallace) where living human beings of different skin color provide a bridge between white skin humans and baboons -

“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked, will no doubt be exterminated. The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.” Darwin 1871

Even an easily led individual like yourself can make sense of that, whether you feel uncomfortable with it is another matter insofar as that is when spirituality kicks in.

Hi sweetie, you may not grasp that the Irish are a spirited and romantic race hence a lot of poets, innovators and creative personalities came from this country and why the spiritual/inspirational life of Christ always appealed to our nature. Hey Jimmy Joe, why not wipe out the gorillas and baboons along with the negros and aborigines so white skin academics can feel really superior !.

Evolution always existed since Archbishop Nicolas Steno proposed that rock strata and fossil strata contained a historical narrative for evolution in 1667. Darwinism is based on British nationalism borrowed from Malthus via your namesake Wallace -

“One day something brought to my recollection Malthus’s “Principles of
Population,” which I had read about twelve years before. I thought of
his clear exposition of “the positive checks to increase”–disease,
accidents, war, and famine–which keep down the population of savage
races to so much lower an average than that of civilized peoples. It
then occurred to me that these causes or their equivalents are
continually acting in the case of animals also….. because in every
generation the inferior would inevitably be killed off and the
superior would remain–that is, the fittest would survive…. The more I
thought over it the more I became convinced that I had at length found
the long-sought-for law of nature that solved the problem of the
    origin of species.” Wallace

The reason you are easily led, and there are many impressionable kids in this forum, is that the faculty needed to scrutinize harmful ideologies and their limitations is absent. Think of yourself as a dyed-in-the-wool unionist clinging on to national superiority filtered through evolution because that is exactly where the ‘God delusion’ crowd come from.

inspiration, n. The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.
spirituality, n. The quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

Personally, I am spiritual, but not religious, and I view my spirituality as an experience entirely of my own concern and business and is not something I would push on others. It is certainly not something I would ever look down my nose at others for not following my experience (as you do). However, being inspirational has nothing to do with someone’s spirituality or lack thereof. Your blinkered, uncharitable, condescending, arrogant and selfish worldview seems to have blinded you to this.

@Gerald Kelleher: 1) I am not a father. Yes, I am holding a baby in my profile picture. But she is not my daughter. The fact you jumped straight to that conclusion shows you don’t think things through and jump straight to conclusions without considering alternatives. That is a common trait in people who are closed-minded and blinkered in their worldview. 2) I am a linguist who specialises in the etymology of words. Yes, both words share a common origin. However, words and their meanings change over time, reflecting the ever-changing environment in which humans grow and evolve and their relationships with their surroundings. An example is the word “awful” which used to mean something worthy of awe. Historically, God would have been described as awful. Describe God as awful to a religious person today and observe how that person reacts. “Nice” used to mean foolish. But if someone today was described as nice it would be in a far more positive sense. This evolution in language also appears to be something you can’t grasp either. 3) Someone can be spiritual without subscribing to any religion. Religion is organised and is about subscribing to a common set of beliefs within a prescribed group of people. Spirituality is someone’s own personal belief system that may, or may not, be connected with religion.
