'A potential catastrophe': 9 in 10 teens have not mastered basic exercise skills

Researchers are teaming up with the GAA to help change this.

IRISH RESEARCHERS ARE teaming up with the GAA in the largest ever research project to tackle issues with young people’s physical health.

In 2014, a Dublin City University (DCU) study found that 89% of adolescents in Ireland have not mastered fundamental movement skills they should have mastered by the age of six – such as running, skipping and kicking a ball.

Researchers from the Insight Centre for Data Analytics and DCU’s School of Health and Human Performance are joining forces with the GAA and the Dublin GAA to find a solution to the problem.

The Moving Well – Being Well project will test the physical ability of 3,000 primary school students in the next three months across the island of Ireland.

Researchers will then create a plan to be adopted by schools and delivered by DCU and Insight researchers, as well as Games Promotion Officers from the GAA from September onwards.

Training sessions are currently underway with the Games Promotion Officers and it is hoped teachers will also be trained in the future. After the plan has been implemented, students will be retested to see how it’s working.

‘A potential catastrophe for public health’

Dr Johann Issartel of Dublin City University’s School of Health and Human Performance said the results of the 2014 study were “an unprecedented low”.

It’s a potential catastrophe for public health because the inability to perform fundamental Movement Skills leads to an aversion to sports and exercise later in life.

Pat Daly, the GAA’s Director of Games Development and Research, said: “I don’t think we need to be alarmist here but there is a problem and this project aims to tackle it in the most child-centred, activity-based, learner-led, achievement-oriented, fun-filled and value-laden manner possible.”

Professor Noel O’Connor of the Insight Centre added: “This is the largest project of its kind anywhere in the world … We will be assessing 3,000 children and with novel interventions, we will potentially reach 130,000 by the end of the project.”

@Ben McArthur: I am involved in Rugby and GAA and i see some amazing athletes with a great attitude. Many of the 16 year olds referee the games for the Cuala academy at weekends and lots of young university students are coaching the boys rugby at Willow Park three days a week. I think the youngsters of today are a cracking bunch, but remember we made them so we have to manage them.

@jane: They can do it, just not to a required standard of proficiency. Basically they’re really terrible at it. They can kick a ball, but not properly for their age because they’re not getting enough physical activity during early childhood. It’s like reading standards. Most children who are 10 can read at an age 10 level but the same cannot be said for their fundamental movement skills.

Until we have a physical education program in every primary school this problem will continue. The foundation of sport involvement and physical literacy must be addressed while children are in the primary schools.

When I lived over in the Netherland, every single kid cycled everywhere and they were mostlyhealthy – here it’s a death trap even cycle to a cyclepath, never mind get somewhere you want to go. And they outsource it to the GAA – the same GAA where every clubhouse is a pub, and every win is celebrated with swathes of alcohol in front of the kids. We really are fecked up with priorities.

@Andy Wallace: have to disagree there. The kids are less active as their parents both work and care is sub contracted to responsible adults who are more protective. Free play is a thing of the past and all these skills like throwing and catching a ball or skipping are highly coordinated skills that require practice to master. The junior schools have also dumbed down their physical activities for fear of legal action and it shows.

This isn’t about activity. It is about skills and technique. Something that in all sports is very rare. Sporting skill and technique only comes naturally to very few children. This is something geeks (researchers) who never played a game in their lives will fail to grasp.

@Andy Wallace: no sorry still don’t agree. Yes there are children on both ends of the spectrum but for the most, everyone benefits from been taught technique and given the opportunity to practice. Activity can only be a benefit to their mental and physical health and the better you get at it, the better you feel. There is nothing wrong with measuring it as it quantifies reality and actions can be put in place to correct. Ignoring is only inviting a bigger problem.
