People are saying this is the 'worst 100 days' of any presidency

The healthcare fiasco is just the latest in a string of defeats for President Trump.

hanque1 / YouTube

HE’S ONLY TWO-THIRDS of the way through the first 100 days – but a number of US commentators are calling it already, saying that Donald Trump is experiencing the worst opening phase of any presidency in the country’s history.

Trump and Republican leaders were forced to pull their Obamacare repeal bill off the House floor last night after it became clear the measure would fail badly.

The development was an embarrassing defeat for the President, who had demanded House Republicans vote on the legislation yesterday. He had earlier called off negotiations with conservative members who were critical of the legislation, threatening to leave Obamacare in place and move on to other issues if the vote failed.

In the end, the bill was withdrawn minutes before the vote was to occur.

“It was delusional in some ways,” said David Gergen, a political analyst who served as an advisor to Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Ford and Clinton.

“This is a man who just shoved it off on other people and described things in ways that are just misleading,” Gergen said of Trump’s response to the fiasco.

It was perhaps the “worst first hundred days we’ve ever seen in a president,” he added.

Author and commentator Charlie Sykes also tweeted that it was the worst 100 days for any president – saying he included William Henry Harrison in that assessment.

Harrison died 31 days into his term.

Here are some of the defeats Trump has suffered since taking office:

Travel bans

Just one week after his inauguration, Trump issued an executive order banning travellers from seven majority-Muslim countries and all refugees.

Unveiled with no prior warning, it sowed travel chaos and confusion, and ignited worldwide outrage.

However, in a humiliating setback for the president, a court in Washington state blocked the order on the grounds that it violated the constitution’s prohibition of religious discrimination.

After the block was upheld on appeal, the administration issued a revised ban it said would better adhere to the law. It would close US borders to nationals of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days, and all refugees for at least 120 days. Iraq was on the original ban but removed in the revision.

Still, courts in Maryland Hawaii dealt the White House a new blow this month, ruling that the second ban also discriminated against Muslims.

Although it does not mention Muslims, the courts have accepted arguments that Trump’s statements while he was running for president last year – that he would open his White House term with a ban on Muslim arrivals – effectively defined his approach.

The case will next be heard in a federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia.

Russia

Since US intelligence agencies last year took the unprecedented step of publicly accusing Russia of trying to swing November’s presidential election in Trump’s favour, questions have swirled about whether some in his campaign colluded with Moscow.

At least four separate congressional investigations are underway into Moscow’s election meddling.

Democrats argue that the interference, in which the Kremlin oversaw a campaign to hack Democratic Party emails that were later leaked, contributed to Hillary Clinton’s defeat.

The cloud hanging over the White House mushroomed last month when Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned after it emerged that he had misled the White House over meeting Russia’s Ambassador in Washington Sergey Kislyak before taking office.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any Russia-related inquiries soon after, following the revelation that he also met Kislyak before Trump took office, contrary to Sessions’s testimony during his confirmation hearing.

In a high-stakes public hearing in Congress on Monday, FBI Director James Comey took the extraordinary step of confirming the agency is investigating whether Trump campaign aides colluded with the Russian effort to influence the election.

He also repudiated the president’s claim that he was wiretapped by Barack Obama.

Both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees will hold more public hearings in the coming weeks.

Healthcare

Trump had thrown his full political weight behind the now-abandoned law change, spending days arm-twisting recalcitrant Republicans.

The billionaire real estate tycoon – who entered the White House with no experience of politics or government – had put his reputation as a dealmaker on the line with the high-risk vote.

t2 From 9 March. Twitter Twitter

But the bill now appears dead, with Republican politicians urging a return to the drawing board.

Trump said he would shift quickly toward tax reform, another longstanding Republican goal.

“With no Democrat support we couldn’t quite get there. They have Obamacare for a little while longer until it ceases to exist which it will at some point in the near future,” he said, in the wake of yesterday’s developments.

He said that if the Democrats were “civilised and came together”, Trump’s administration could work out “a great healthcare bill” with them.

Trump was back on Twitter this morning telling people to expect “a great healthcare plan” after Obamacare ‘explodes’.

@Paul: We don’t but manufacturers need to bear some responsibility here. If there was a tax levied on practise package produced by manufacturers they would reduce the amount the amount they produce no bother. Drinks companys responded to the sugar tax by reducing the sugar content in their drinks. Pushing the responsibility back where it belongs on the manufacturers does actually work to bring about change.

That company was getting free labor when they made people to sort out recyclables free of charge for them which they then sold for profit.
Guess that free labour was not enough now they want us to pay for the privilege of sorting recyclables for them so they can sell them and make even more money.

“Panda Waste, run by Navan-based businessmen Noel and Eamon Waters, adopted unlimited status two years ago. The company operates across Dublin, Louth and Meath. It is controlled by an entity called Adnap Holdings, the shares in which are held by companies with post office box addresses in the Isle of Man. A classic offshore tactic to hide profit from scrutiny.

Irritating though, but society needs rules and rules need enforcement. Otherwise the place would resemble a shanty town in no time.

I think we should be laser printing an ID at the till so people’s waste is traceable but many will scream big brother, when actually it’s less big brother but more like mammy cleaning up after them because they are too stupid and lazy to do it themselves. Wasters.

Not even surprised they did anyway, let alone the Chinese issue. There’s constant dumping where I live in North Dublin and the waste epidemic is out of control here. I was in Ikea on Sunday, they have bins in the restaurant marked for food, paper, plastic, EVERYTHING all f**cked into the one bin.. add that to the fact that they won’t clear their tables after them despite signs everywhere saying to do so. The attitude of refusal to be told to do anything, the laziness. Some people here are such slobs, it all has to go into gen waste then, all to the landfill. They should be charged for the money it costs to clean up after them.

Had she thrown the nappy out the window I would understand you getting your knickers in a twist but she stopped and used the waste bin provided. I fail to see what is wrong with that. Nobody likes carting a stinking nappy around in her (new) BMW and really the car that she is driving is not remotely relevant except that it seems to have shown up your inadequacies and eccentricities. The rats across the road are also irrelevant to the story. I would suggest you stop looking out you window searching for things to get outraged against. The poor lady was obviously quite stressed with an unwell toddler and her language, though deplorable, was in the circumstances quite restrained.

You honestly stopped a lady from using a public bin because it was outside your house, next to a bus stop. You took her photo, made a show of her in front of her family when you had absolutely no right to do so. She hasn’t gone and tried to post the thing in your letterbox. In regard to rats nesting, no I haven’t been that unfortunate and it’s not something anyone would be happy with however, I am guessing now that the bin has been removed, the likelihood of rats entering your home has massively increased. You can’t on one hand shout about folk inappropriately ridding waste then have the correct means to do so, removed.

We pay enough taxes and with that I expect better service from the disposal of waste. The charges should be put on the manufacturers of plastic, and plastic produce should be taxed highly to supplement the recycling.

Passing everything on to the end user is a cop out… tax plastics, come up with better recycling packages.

We should be producing less stuff in the first place. Recycling is not going to make much of a difference. The problem the idea of less consumption goes against capitalism.
What about clothing? All the throwaway clothes people, especially women, buy nowadays are all ending up in landfill and contaminating the earth. It’s disgusting really.

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jul/11/uk-households-binned-300000-tonnes-of-clothing-in-2016

We’re really just going to keep consuming until resources become even tighter and pretty much all wilderness is gone in the world. Eventually this will lead to war, facism, death, etc.
Can anyone really see any other outcome?

A charge for the contents ‘might’ be acceptable if this excuse is true but a BIN LIFT charge is not acceptable as there never was one before as they made a profit selling the waste. It’s similar to the phone line rental charge and then usage charge, it’s just a legal price ‘gouge’. Also, if and when water charges are forced in, we have to use our time and our water to rinse and dry items to keep the bin company happy. Time to organise more protest marches in my opinion.

No such things as a trade off when it comes to providing services in this country. The concept of only having a finite amount of money to spend is not understood by many in this country

Bring back reusable materials like glass bottles. This would create more jobs in bottle factories and more revenue for government through income taxes etc. It would cut down on recycling of plastic.

It really is time for Ireland to show leadership here like with the plastic bag levy and legislate against the unnecessary plastic production and place the onus on the supply chain to control waste; i.e. any packaging that is used at Aldi, Tesco, etc. is returned back to them so it becomes their economic burden rather than the customer.
This would force the supermarkets to look at how they could reduce their costs and change their designs.
This could also have a knock on reduction in carbon consumption helping to achieve the carbon reduction targets as per the Paris agreement.
The levy on bags has really been a success and other countries have looked at this and replicated it. Ireland is a small country and has the ability to design itself as a truly green country.

But they SELL the plastic to get recycled. Even if they’re looking for a new buyer, they still shouldn’t charge the people recycling more – that doesn’t make sense.

But i will go back for the fun and games when they start. I did for one of the big water marches.
