Scene of shooting at Liberty House on Railway Street. RollingNews.ie

Dublin gun attack victim shot four times as locals tried to help him

Eddie Staunton is expected to survive the attack.

GARDAÍ HAVE SAID that Dublin’s latest gangland victim was shot a number of times as members of the public attempted to perform first aid on him.

Eddie Staunton was knocked off his bike on James Joyce Street in the north inner city last night at around 9.30pm. While the gunman parked his car nearby, Staunton managed to flee the area and made his way to nearby Peader Kearney House on Railway Street where he sought medical attention from locals.

Around 15 minutes later, the suspected driver of the car approached Staunton as he was being tended to by members of the public. The shooter fired four rounds into his body, including one to his groin area.

Despite being shot a number of times, Staunton is expected to survive the attack. However, he is said to have suffered permanent injuries as a result of the incident.

Targeted

He has connections to the Hutch family and gardaí are investigating whether he was attacked as he was seen as an easy target by the Kinahan cartel.

Officers said they are looking for a man who they described as being “tall, slim to medium build and who was wearing a dark top over a grey hooded top, dark bottoms and dark runners with a white sole”.

According to a garda spokesman: “The injured man was cycling on James Joyce Street when, at approximately 9.35pm, he was struck by a vehicle, a silver Ford Focus 08CN6682.

The collision occurred at the junction of James Joyce Street and Sean McDermott Street. The victim managed to flee the scene on foot and went to nearby Peader Kearney House on Railway Street seeking assistance.

“At 9.47pm in Peader Kearney House while first aid was being administered to the victim by members of the community, a person, believed to be the driver of the vehicle involved in the ramming, approached the victim and shot him a number of times. The suspected offender then ran up Railway Street in the direction of Amiens Street.”

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses and who may have information or who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious to contact them at Store Street garda station on 01 666 800 The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any garda station.

“While the gunman parked his car” – does this sound surreal to anyone?
If they shot him 4 times, and had the time to shoot him in the crotch, I don’t think this attack was meant to be fatal. Still, If you shoot a gun at someone, it should be treated as attempted murder.

@Liam O’Reilly: You have to be careful parking. It’s easy to pick up a ticket which would really spoil your day.

@Liam O’Reilly: the maddening thing is if it is a case of mistaken identity then they can only be done for manslaughter because they got the wrong person!!!

@Deborah Behan: the victim isn’t dead so there is no manslaughter.

Not very smart of the shooter to approach him while others were around

The fact it was 10-15 minutes after the initial hit before the shooting says a lot. I thought the area was supposed to full of ERU and checkpoints?

@Jamie I think the 15mins is very interesting. How did someone injured from a car impact get away easily enough to take 15 mins to find? I don’t think so. Now try this: Shooter phones boss “I hit him good with the car, but he got away”, boss: ” finish the job or you’ll be next”.
Yes that sounds more likely. If the “hitman” was dumb enough to have his own phone on him officers will have already figured out that he likely made a call in the 15 minute period. They will get mobile records of calls at that time from that area and narrow their search very quickly I should think.

I feel so bad for the innocent bystanders who were caught up in this and had to witness it, especially any children. Lucky none of them were shot by mistake.

Why didn’t he just shoot him in the head if had the time to walk up and take aim?

@Liam Whelan: It sounded like he aimed to maim.
Likely much less sentence for GBH or assault with a deadly weapon.
