Two men arrested over shooting of great-grandmother in south Dublin

The woman received a gunshot wound when a man discharged a firearm when she opened the front door of her home.

TWO MEN HAVE been arrested over the shooting of a woman at a house in south Dublin.

The 77-year-old woman was shot in the leg after answering the door to a man who was banging at her door on Oliver Plunkett Avenue in Monkstown at around 11pm on Thursday night. It is believed a family member was the intended target of the attack.

The men – 29 and 31 -were arrested this morning following planned searches in north and south Dublin carried out by uniformed and Detective Gardaí from Dun Laoghaire assisted by members from the Divisional Burglary Response Unit, Armed Response Unit and Drugs and Organised Crime Unit.

The men are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 as amended at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station.

The woman received a gunshot wound when a man discharged a firearm when she opened the front door of her home.

The man, standing directly outside the front door, is described as being of average height. He may have had a beard and wore a hat/hood on his head. He is believed to have worn dark clothing. It is not known what direction the man fled the scene.

The woman received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The scene was preserved and a full technical examination was carried out. An Incident Room has been established at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station and Gardaí have carried out house to house enquiries as part of this on-going investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact them at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 6665000, The Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any Garda station.

    Even if they get the guy that did this, his solicitor will spin the judge some ‘tough upbringing with drugs’ yearn and he’ll get a reduced sentence with time off for ‘good behaviour’ and he’ll be back on the streets in no time.

    That’s our wonderful justice system for you.

    @John Fitzpatrick:

    And is there a chance he had a tough upbringing with drugs? Could that upbringing as a child maybe influence the person as an adult? Is society doing enough to help kids like this rather than letting the inevitable happen when they are older? Maybe instead of looking at the judicial system we could look to our education system and fix the cause rather than the probem

    He should get a 15 year suspended sentence for shooting an old woman.

    @Nick Allen:

    I’m not saying that those who raised him or even society as a whole are totally innocent, but ultimately he made the decision to shoot that woman – that is the decision he should mainly be judged on.

    The problem today is that courts deflect away from the person themselves and start looking for excuses when the main brunt of the fault lies with the person who made the decision to do the crime in the first place.

    I know she has got non-life threatening injuries but mentally she is going to suffer hugely. This will not be taken into account at sentencing. I hope their whole families are ashamed to even know them.

    A great grandmother at 70? Must be one of those types of families if you know what I mean

    @Jlocoroco: The woman is 77. If each generation had a child at 25 she’d be a great grandmother. Is there something unusual about having a child at 25?
