'Condoms, what are they?': Customs official describes the morning of the 1971 contraceptive train

“I was told, ‘Just stand there and look intelligent’. I hadn’t a clue what was going on.”

AS 49 IRISH women were making their way from Belfast to Dublin on what would become known as the contraceptive train of 1971 – customs officers from the docks were being sent to Connolly Station in anticipation of their arrival.

The women, who were part of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement, changed the social landscape of Ireland when they brought condoms down from Northern Ireland, while contraception was illegal in the Republic.

John O’Connor was one of the customs officers at Connolly Station on the day the contraceptive train came in.

He told TheJournal.ie, “I was 19 at the time and I was only a couple of weeks on the job.”

He said he had been on the ships at the port until that morning when it was announced that they were going to the railway station. “You were trained on the job at that time.

“There was a big crowd I remember.  We went through a barrier and then all of a sudden there were no people at all.

I was told to stand at a table and I asked, ‘What are we looking for?’ I was told we were seizing condoms and I said, ‘What are they?’

O’Connor said his colleague just responded by saying, ‘Not another one’.

I was told, ‘Just stand there and look intelligent’. I hadn’t a clue what was going on.

The women couldn’t get their hands on the pill in Belfast without a prescription so they brought back aspirin tablets and swallowed them publicly at the train station  - knowing customs officials wouldn’t immediately know the difference.

O’Connor said he didn’t take part in the searches. “It was my first time dealing with passengers.

I was also told to smile because there were cameras on us so I just smiled like a cheshire cat.

At the time the story made news all over the world and in recent years it has been brought to the stage in the form of a musical, The Train.

An element of O’Connor’s story has now been incorporated into the revival of the show this year.

The Train is opening at The Abbey Theatre tonight and runs until Saturday April 15, before going to The Mac in Belfast from April 19 – 23. www.roughmagic.ie.

I am o,d enough to remember this strange and febrile days.

Contraception was predicted to bring the birth rate to zero or to drive men into becoming homosexual. ( I did not understand it either.)

Divorce meant that Irish men would abandon their wives and there would be no fathers left.

Decriminalising homosexuality meant that Irish men would turn to each other and give up women.

Now we are left with the last vestige, the weird and dogmatic Eight Amendment which has supposedly “saved” millions of lives in Ireland.

Getting rid of the Eight Amendment will rid us of this last bit of fundamentalism of the old days.

For some reason, none of the predicted flood gates this, flood gates that and the final end of Irish society never happens.

Condoms were still not freely available in the 26 counties until 1994. They were not in supermarkets til 12 years later & even locked in cabinets on shelves. How many stds & unwanted pregnancies were caused by embarrassing young people. Even when they were only available in chemists the chemist may not approve of you as you were not “married” as you needed a prescription for it.There were & still are very expensive in this country while other countries even give some out to young couples for free. The government tax these as luxuries even though there are essential to public health this day and age.

@Fred Jensen: the Wolfendon Report in the U.K. recommended decriminalisation and then in 1967 this was given effect to even though the Roman Catholic Church in Britain fought tooth and nail against that.

It was not until 1993, 26 years later, that Ireland was forced by the European Court of Human Rights and the challenge by David Norris to decriminalise homosexuality in Ireland.

Alan Turing for example, a war hero if ever there was one. Nobody was treated like that in Ireland.

@Grainne Abdulaziz: Legal homocide is not a hurdle we should ever overcome.

Also, if Catholics followed the New Testament to its word we’d have a morale society. The teachings in the New Testament are mainly liberal and are great lessons for humans to learn. Even as an agnostic I find having secular catholic schools better than having a free for all with the possibility of vicious militant religious schools developing and abusing the laws. We all know how that’s going in the UK. No thanks.

One last note, I find it funny to find people here screaming repeal the eight and screw the Catholic Church while at the same time supporting Islam and defending it as if it’s somehow a more liberal, beneficial or progressive religion. There is nothing better about Islam than catholicism, every aspect of it is worse. It’s more of a cult, it’s more anti women, and it’s more conservative.
