'A huge shock': Workers at Roscommon cigar factory facing redundancy

Local TD Michael Fitzmaurice said he is “dismayed” at the news.

EMPLOYEES AT A cigar factory in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon have been told they are facing redundancy.

Exclusive Cigar Manufacturers Ireland’s 38 workers have been told they will lose their jobs next month unless an alternative to closing the factory is found.

Local independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice said he is “dismayed” at the news that redundancies could come into effect as early as 15 May.

“It is a huge jobs blow to the region and I will be seeking a meeting with the management of the plant to find out what their exact plans are for the closure and for the premises going forward.

“Having been a solid employer in the town of Ballaghaderreen since 1978, the closure of one of the biggest private employers in west Roscommon is a huge shock to the economy of the area and a massive blow to the 38 people involved.”

Fitzmaurice added that he will raise the issue with Jobs Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor and ask Enterprise Ireland and the IDA to “prioritise the Ballaghaderreen area for alternative and additional employment as soon as possible”.

Too many having great craic out of these people losing their jobs. I live close to and often shop in Ballahadereen and I did not know there was a cigar factory there. I gave up smoking just six weeks ago, smoking is a choice, no matter how wrong it is. Heroin addicts get more support from this government than people trying to give up smoking. I did it under my own steam but two of my friends got a stern lecture and a promise of a call up phone call from The HSE which never happened.

    “Dismayed “?
Such hypocrisy coming from an elected representative. People are dying from lung cancer every day as a direct result from smoking and he’s “dismayed”?
    Cop on with yourself man!
Yes,There has to be a certain amount of sympathy for the workers losing their jobs but even THEY must have understood that this day would eventually come given the campaign to stop people smoking, whether it’s cigarettes or cigars.Time to move on.
