Tallaght hit-and-run killing victim named as father of three Stephen Lynch (32)

Gardaí believe the incident was intentional. They are searching for two cars.

Updated 11.30am

GARDAÍ FEAR THAT a man killed in a hit-and-run in Tallaght last night may have been targeted.

The man, father of three Stephen Lynch (32), was killed around 7pm last night at Brookview Close in the west Dublin suburb.

He was struck by a car, the driver of which subsequently fled the scene on foot.

It is understood that he had received injuries before being struck by the car. Gardaí believe that he was run over a number of times.

No arrests have yet been made.

At a press briefing today, the gardaí said that Lynch was not involved in criminality.

They said it was too early in the investigation to say exactly what had happened or how many people were involved, as they are still trying to establish the exact circumstances.

They are trying to trace the movements of two cars: a silver Ford Focus, registration 10-WW-1812 which was left at the scene, and a red VW Polo registration 01-D-9539.

Gardaí are trying to establish what brought Stephen Lynch to the area, and what his activities were while he was there. They also want to find out more about who he interacted with while he was there.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station on 01 6666000, on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111, or at any Garda station.

    Other news outlets have published graphic descriptions of a brutal assault and a deliberate running over by the car. Our society needs to take a serious look at the level of violence taking place daily.

    @Noely Cox: Some news websites feel entitled to jump to a conclusion that the beating and hit+run are directly related (namely that the guy being hit by the car was intentional/intended to result in the man’s death), but until there’s a court case and conviction or confession, websites shouldn’t be permitted to assume the two are the same story, even though it guarantees more clicks.
    It should be noted even the Indo don’t say “deliberate running over by the car”, he was hit by the car as he attempted to flee, but that still doesn’t guarantee the intention was to hit or kill.
    The journal are no saints when it comes to click bait, but you lot are whinging that the headline isn’t sensational enough for you.

    @Ciaran Ó Fallúin:
    So you’re suggesting that a man gets beaten in the street then accidentally run over in a second unrelated incident and the driver of the car then hops out and legs it?
    Seriously?

    @Jack Cassady: Hi Jack – No. Stating the possibility of an alternative to premeditated murder is completely different to what you’ve said. It’s nuanced, I know, but that’s life. I disagreed with the top comment using the work “deliberately” when that hasn’t been reported but that anyone who reads it would make their own judgements and presumptions.

    There exists scenarios in which the man died in the hit and run where the intention wasn’t to kill him with the car, but to chase him down. For that reason, it’s not for us in a comment section to decide what happened or expect news websites to ignore the possibility and make that decision before a court case or confession.

    @Noely Cox: “It’s daylight murder!”….

    Noely, once again, we don’t get to make that decision!

    This comment section is filled with people making black and white assumptions of an incident based on a 300 word article.

    Maybe it was daylight murder and hopefully justice will be served accordingly, but that’s not for today.

    @Ciaran Ó Fallúin: Or as RTE states he was allegedly repeatedly driven over by the same car according to eye witnesses – OK you might need a court to validate that a crime has taken place – good luck with that

    @Austin Rock: that’s new info Austin and if it’s true i don’t have a problem with it being classed as murder. But it changes nothing about what i wrote above.

    People on here demanding more sensationalist reporting sickens me.

    The poor man and his family. It wasn’t a hit and run, if you read the local papers they give a more accurate portrayal of what happened. And in our justice system, no doubt the culprits, when caught, will get suspended sentences on top of their probably 30+ previous convictions. Classic Ireland, keeping criminals on the street.

    Local papers give a more accurate portrayal!!! I don’t think so, the papers stories are partially true and the rest fabricated to seem interesting and to sell . I would’nt believe everything you read .

    Goes with the territory. Guards themselves have hit and run. Society increasingly seems to mimic the behaviour of its governing classes. Guards had me rammed off the road 30 years ago, drove off, and left me standing alone perusing the floorpan of my upturned yoke. When those in charge continually give you ‘the bird’ , they resoundingly fail to encourage sound social conscience. After all we are what we learn, the difference between right and wrong.

    Society has been dragged into depravity due to the lack of support in their communities by successive FF and FG governments who are more concerned with private enterprise and how many graduates they can get through college to encourage ‘big’ business (who pay feck all tax) and ignoring the basic trades and apprenticeships for those who do not or cannot go to university. People have been isolated by a neo-liberal agenda which will either implode or will be, and is the cause of civil unrest and violence in the streets as people with little hope rebel against those few on the wealthy side of the track who enjoy a life way beyond theirs and ignored by the controlling powers.
