A Greyhound waste collection vehicle at the company's depot in Clondalkin Sasko Lazarov/Photocall Ireland

Councillor criticises 'disruption and confusion' of Dublin bin changeover

Sinn Féin Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha said the council had failed to negotiate the handover properly with private operators Greyhound.

A SINN FÉIN councillor has criticised Dublin City Council’s handling of the changeover of its waste collection services.

Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha, chairperson of the council’s Finance Committee, said the handing of bin services to private operator Greyhound this month had caused “widespread disruption and confusion” to residents.

He was speaking ahead of a special council meeting due to be held tomorrow to discuss the changeover. Greyhound sparked controversy after announcing that it would require residents to pay a €100 annual charge in full up front – but then rowed back on its decision.

Mac Donncha said:

City Council management must be challenged on their negotiation of this deal. They were content to let Greyhound demand the €100 standing charge up front. Yet within two days of the handover Greyhound, responding to public pressure, agreed to accept two instalments of €50. What were the Council negotiators doing?

The councillor also said residents had not been given sufficient notice of the change, saying: “People were informed only at the last minute that the changeover was happening.”

He claimed the move fit with the “privatisation agenda” of Fine Gael and Labour in Government.

Typical, they still attempt changeovers even tho they’re proven to be the worst at them. Our government(national and local) sure love being the worst at things.

Cannot believe the Labour Cllrs, supposed Lefties, voted in favour of the privatisation of the bins… In fact, they were pushing for it!!

The Labour Party in Ireland stopped being left wing long before Blair’s New Labour became Tory-lite in the UK. Like the majority of Irish politicians they care about only one thing – themselves.

The Labour Party on Dublin City Council have consistently voted against privatising the waste collection service, however waste collection is a reserved function of the City Manager, as per the Environment Act 2003. The City Manager is appointed by the Department of the Environment and is given the role of CEO of the Council. He can reject the opinion of the elected councillors on certain reserved issues, which is what he has done on this occasion. It is therefore not fair to blame the Labour Party for this!

Not ‘would be’ they MUST BE when you look at some of the policies they put forward and support. We need a new party that takes democracy (and common sense) seriously.

Fair criticism tbh. If only for the fact that the assuredly non provincial Joe Duffy hijacked the airwaves for a week to gripe about his local refuse provider, and the nation at large could do with a break!

One SF councillor, a sympathetic one-sided journalists, and seven criticisms of the simple fact that emptying bins should not be a job-for-life civil service number.

All been said DCC were losing 6.5 million a year just on bin collections. This would probably have led to higher charges somewhere else in order to pay for it. I’m glad they sold out, the private operators are better at it as they know what they’re doing. I’d love to know though how much greyhound paid for or got paid for the operation.

I wonder is this happening in a lot of areas around the country? Kerry County Council sold their refuse collection service to a private company also, for Killarney and Tralee anyway.

I wonder will greyhound continue to make several collections a week to certain ‘disadvantaged’ areas in Dublin like DCC do at the moment, or will they just do it weekly/fortnightly and make these people look after the area they live in themselves!!

We are trying Ozo as an alternative to greyhound. Signing up on line is a flat fee for the year with 10% discount so it works out about 6 per lift for twice a month. There are other pay as you go and pay by weight options too- i like that they have choice. I was disgusted receiving the backdated demand (dated jan 2nd I think) for €100 from Greyhound around 12th January.

If she does that, she will end up paying for it all to be collected in the black bin. Her green bin is still free for now!
