IRELAND INCREASED ITS housing stock by 8,800 units between 2011 and 2016, compared to over 201,000 from roughly the same period a decade ago.
A Census 2016 special profile on housing in Ireland found that the country increased its housing supply by just 0.4% in the five-year period of 2011 to 2016 (from 1,994,845 million units to 2,003,645 million units).
This is in stark contrast to the change in Ireland’s housing stock between 2002 and 2006, when the number of units grew by 21.2%. In that time, housing stock increased from 1,460,053 million to 1,769,613 million.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s population was recorded at 4,761,865 in the last Census. That’s compared to 4,588,252 in 2011.
The Census report looks at the different aspects of housing in Ireland as enumerated on Census night in April of last year.
The report found that a total of 2,003,645 houses and apartments were counted on Census night. Of these 1,697,665 were occupied by persons usually resident in the State (as opposed to people visiting).
There were a total of 183,312 vacant houses and apartments across the country, as well as 62,148 vacant holiday homes.
A total of 95,596 empty homes were in urban areas.
“We need politicians and policy makers at all levels to recognise that empty homes can play an immediate role in alleviating the housing and homeless crisis,” said Francis Doherty of homeless charity the Peter McVerry Trust.
The area with the most vacant dwellings in the country in Blacklion, Co Cavan, where over 46% of properties are vacant.
Home ownership and rent
The report also showed a decline in the rate of home ownership in the country.
Despite the marginal increase in housing stock, the number of owner occupied households fell between 2011 and 2016 (from 1,149,924 to 1,147,552).
The rate of home ownership dropped then from 69.7% to 67.6%. This rate was last seen 1971.
The fall was evident in both rural and urban areas.
In terms of age, renting was more common than owning among adults younger than 35. After this age, more households owned rather than rented their homes.
In previous Censuses, the age after which more people owned their home was younger.
The equivalent age in previous censuses was 32 years in 2011, 28 years in 2006, 27 years in 2002 and 26 years in 1991.
The report also found that the average weekly rent paid to private landlords was landlords in April 2016 was €199.92, up from €171.19 in 2011 (a rise of over 16%).
Dublin city saw the biggest increase, with rents going up by 30%. Other areas of Dublin also saw significant increases in rent.

@Billy McNamara: I think that the problem is that he can’t be bribed into silence; likely this would be attempted if it was reasonably sure not to blow up in the face of the Government.

McCabe is innocent and has no reason to accept “a bribe”.
He will go down in Irish history as the honest man who broke the circle of Irish political corruption.
What are they hiding from ? The truth – in the same way they hide from facts – hospitals in crisis / homelessness at record high numbers etc. All we get from Fianna Gael is lies – spin – bluster and pay 5 mill per year to a team of muppets to post pictures of Leo in his socks eating chicken nuggets or emptying the dishwasher. What this government did to Mr McCabe tells you everything you need to know about the low life’s that currently operate in the Dail – dangerous, untrustworthy free loaders without a shred of decency between them.

Who will rid us of this turbulent Garda Sergeant?
A Garda of true integrity could be dangerous. Who knows what might emerge, points, breath tests, set up, perverting the course of justice, fitting up political opponents, targeting left wing TDs etc.
@Fiona deFreyne: Left Wing TD’s still under Garda surveillance. We should at the very least aspire to an autonomous police force.
Handy enough, setup an auld commission, then hide behind it. Not me guv, sure it was like that when I found it. Who, ME, must be some other fella, sure I only got this auld job because I did a bit of covering up for our former dear leader, Herr Enda.
Why are we still looking into this?
After all, everything is perfect in Leo Land. Everyone is employed and earning bundles, in fact enough to buy a €350k house with cash. Lets not spoil the party you big bunch of downers. Leo Land is a happy place.

LETS all be honest ,do we expect the truth to come out ,in all probability no we dont ,this government like previous governments continue to protect the system at all costs .they dont want to see how rotten it is ,a bit like the church and the child abuse ,truth is not for the masses but for a select few in order to protect the false integrity of the state .none of them have the bottle their just well paid yes men .
Another rise in the opinion polls beckons so.

I think the latter is more fitting….
If I was accused of breaking the law I would instantly deny it, not wait for a tribunal.
Do these lot go out in the night time and dig up the roads so as people in their area will complain about potholes, and hay presto, they are fixed in no length of time, and the easily led will again vote for the good Samaritan that made their journey just that little bit smoother. Now the one about the three bears.

Who cares about any of this crap anymore. Pay McCabe and move on. We’re sick of listening to this self righteous crap.
Policing is a tough game. We’ve all got responsibilities regarding policing this country. We shouldn’t dwell too much on whingers who feel hard done by. These people need to get over themselves. Attention seekers. Political point scorers, etc.
