US TV recreates Graham Dwyer murder case

Dwyer was sentenced to life for the murder of Elaine O’Hara.

A US TV broadcaster has recreated the murder of Elaine O’Hara by Graham Dwyer and the subsequent murder investigation for a true-crime docudrama.

The programme is titled ‘Yes, Master’ and is part of the Married With Secrets series on the Investigation Discovery channel.

Dublin architect Dwyer was found guilty of stabbing the childcare worker to death in August 2012.

Elaine O’Hara’s remains were not found until over a year after the murder and Dwyer was subsequently convicted in 2015.

The programme tells the audience that it was assumed the victim had taken her own life and that the conviction came about because of a combination of luck and dogged police work.

It also details how Dwyer manipulated his vulnerable victim during their secret relationship before he lured her to the spot where he murdered her.

The show is a combination of acted reconstructions and real-life interviews with people connected to the case. These contributions came from a number of Elaine O’Hara’s friends as well as interviews with Irish journalists who covered the 45-day Dublin trial.

The dramatic roles in the show are performed by US actors and they include Elaine O’Hara, Graham Dwyer, the victim’s father and a number of investigating gardaí.

One of the journalists featured in the programme describes Dwyer as “the most evil murderer that Ireland has ever known”.

“It was great relief when he was found guilty of murder. You were happy that Elaine got justice. You were happy for Elaine’s family,” friend Jane Cahill says towards the end of the programme.

The programme was first broadcast in August 2016.

@Dub_Right: do the Americans themselves not notice the difference between the real Irish accents of the people interviewed, and the God awful pretend Irish accents of the actors, I wonder?

@Jumperoo: Many can’t. Some American casting directors insist on the Oirish accent over a genuine Irish accent.

I think it’s very distasteful making a drama based on this awful case. That poor girls Family have been through enough, let Elaine O’Hara rest in peace now and her family grieve in private.

Are there not enough unemployed Irish actors who would jump at such roles? I can see, rather hear, why there are no plans to screen it in Ireland.
