British MP claims 'Sunday Sun' to launch in April

Labour MP Tom Watson has made the claim today. News International has declined to comment.

A BRITISH MP who has been a prominent voice in the phone hacking scandal has claimed that a Sunday Sun newspaper is to be launched by News International in April.

Tom Watson, who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee investigating phone hacking at the now defunct News of The World, has claimed that News International chairman Rupert Murdoch has seen draft designs of the Sunday Sun which he says will launch in April.

The Irish Sun newspaper referred queries to its corporate headquarters in London. A spokesperson for News International told TheJournal.ie: “We decline to comment on that. We haven’t got a comment on that.”

One former News of The World journalist Sophy Ridge has quelled the speculation, tweeting this afternoon: “Hearing the rumours about a Sunday Sun launching in April are wide of the mark…”

There has been talk that News International would launch a Sunday Sun or The Sun on Sunday ever since the News of The World was shut down in July in the wake of revelations that it had hacked the voicemail of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Its Irish edition The Irish News of The World was also shut down. It employed 22 full-time staff most of whom were let go with a small few reassigned to News International’s other titles.

At the time staff at the Irish Sun were told their operation would be switching to a seven-day run within the next few months but that has not materialised since.

Now Watson, a Labour MP, claims today that a ‘Sunday Sun’ will be launched in April “at a discounted price”:

It was never a case of IF, but WHEN this was going to happen. Within a week of the News of The World closing, this was talked about.
Murdoch and co must now think that enough time has passed for in publicity and enough damage control done (major people phones tapped, paid off), to bring forth a new newspaper – probably one fill with the same quality (hight or low – I suspect the latter) journalism.

Oooooh great!!!! Now this steaming pile of warmed faeces will be available to knuckle-dragging lumps, and celebrity-obsessed bimbos the length and breadth of the land 7 days a week!!!
If you are feeling a kind of sinking feeling at this news, don’t worry, it’s just the nation’s collective IQ slipping another dozen points or so.
