Complaint upheld after man is surprised Lidl jumper is only 3% cashmere

The “classic and elegant” jumper cost €16.99.

THE ADVERTISING STANDARDS Authority for Ireland (ASAI) has upheld a complaint made against Lidl over the amount of cashmere in a jumper it sold.

The shop listed the “classic and elegant” men’s jumper as “fine knit cashmere”. It cost €16.99 and came in four different colours.

The ASAI notes the man who complained said, while the cashmere claim was unqualified, he was “surprised to see from the packaging that the jumper contained only 3% cashmere”.

Lidl said its description of the jumper was fair as the item in question was fine knit and contained cashmere.

The shop said the description reflected the retail industry norm for items containing such materials. Lidl said it never referred to the garment as being 100% cashmere and its packaging clearly stated the percentage of cashmere it contained.

‘Not misleading’

With their response, Lidl provided examples of other items containing certain materials and how they were described by the manufacturer – such as pictures of a throw described as a ‘cashmere throw’ which contained 20% cashmere and a jumper described as a ‘lambswool’ which contained 50% lambswool.

The advertisers said they had not misled their customers at any point. They considered the description of their product to be fair and accurate, particularly given the item’s packaging and price.

The ASAI examined the use of the description ‘cashmere’ in a range of advertising by other retailers. It noted that where the product was not pure cashmere the description made this clear, for example by stating it was cashmere and cotton or cashmere and merino.

The organisation found Lidl’s advertising should not appear in the same format again.

Last Saturday a friend of mine was in flannerys on Camden st with her friend. Her friend has just recently started going out with a police officer who was on duty with his partner in the area. She called and asked him to drop in and say hi. By all accounts, according to my friend, his partner was hammered and started making a move on my friend. She rejected him and he said and I quote “give me your number but don’t tell my wife”. Needless to say I was pretty shocked to hear that story.

I’m glad the red thumbs are gone because I’d be hockeyed….I am a Garda. I am not trying to excuse any of the scandals that are out there. But from all the comments on every article you’d swear it was the Gestapo they were talking about. I can only speak for myself as an individual but I ALWAYS try to be mannerly to the people I’m dealing with and have never been in any way corrupt. While everyone is getting their digs in I just think it might be more productive to come up with some ideas of how to restore the relationship because everybody suffers when a police force is seen as being untrustworthy.

I totally understand peoples anger with everything they are hearing but instead of just taking lazy swipes at them constructive suggestions of how to rebuild that confidence would surely be a better way forward. A police force is necessary and everyone knows that. So I’m asking….. does anyone have any ideas of how to move forward together. Because it is in everybodys interest.

@Mick Murphy: Mick, people seen a side of te force never seen before when they started doing security for Dinny’s water meter installers. Look at Dail Eireann, when was that level of policing seen before FG came to power.
The force has been politicised. It’s no longer seen an independent force charged with enforcing the laws without fear or favour.
A corrupt government needs a corrupt police force in order to thrive.
At this stage the Gardai are seen in the same light as the clergy were after the abuse scandals came to light.
Everyone knows there are decent men and women in the force. But no one places any trust in the force as a whole now.

@Dave Doyle: firstly Dave respect for retorting with a reasonable answer and not a typical tirade of abuse. Indeed I agree that there was severe reputational damage done to the force at the time of water protests. As another commenter stated though guards HAD to police those protests. They are not fans of paying more taxes either. People have a constitutional right to peaceful protest. it’s the guards job to ensure the protest remains peaceful. All that aside Dave my overall point is that this terrible damage done over the past number of years to the force is hurting all the citizens of the country and we should be looking for ways to repair that for the good of all.

I don’t think people have lost faith in the people they’re likely to be dealing with, but as a whole, the people as a collective have lost faith and trust in the force as a whole. To me that’s not down to the good work you and people I know like you, it’s down to the government and the commissioner. I dont see either in a position to restore faith either so I don’t get why these people remain, or are allowed to, remain in place and destroy credibility more. Fair play for your comments and genuine stance without really, understandably, being able to voice your own opinion.

Look at the amount of resources and power we have intrusted in the Gardaí. Our crime figures are reduced because people don’t even bother anymore to even report crimes. Victims of crimes are laugh at by those using the pulse system to spy on neighbours, ex partners and Gaa players. From penalty points to breath tests nothing has changed or will change until the rot is removed.
Everyone who highlights garda corruption like Clare Daly or whistleblowers have being singled out for “special” garda treatment. No one is surprised at what garda management has become and many are now indifferent to corruption within the force. Last year the ASTI or GRA were looking to have there members provided with guns. Now they want legislation to refuse citizens the right to record Gardaí acting like thugs. The ASTI should be ashamed how there members abuse the publics trust, will even one resign over there own mistakes?
