Irish Water wants to spend around €50 million upgrading the sewers in Blanchardstown, Meath and Kildare

The proposed project will be located along the Tolka River Valley in Blanchardstown.

IRISH WATER SAYS it is submitting a planning application to Fingal County Council to upgrade the existing sewer network serving Blanchardstown and surrounding areas.

The €50 million plan will also see the networks improved in Kildare and in Mulhuddart and Castleknock in Dublin and Dunboyne, Clonee, Ashbourne and Ratoath in County Meath.

The proposed project will be located along the Tolka River Valley in Blanchardstown between Parslickstown and Mill Road and a new pumping station will be constructed at Waterville close to Mill Road.

The project will include the construction of around 3.2kms of new sewer pipelines using trenchless tunnelling techniques and the construction of underground storage tanks with a total combined capacity of approximately 30,000m³. A new control building to house all electrical switchgear, control equipment, an odour control unit, a generator room and ESB sub-station.

During the project local sewer and utility diversions will be carried out to facilitate construction of the storm water storage tanks and Tolka Valley Park Pumping Station.

Once the proposed project is complete the area will be fully reinstated to match the original condition and associated site works. The existing sewer network was originally constructed in the Tolka Valley in the 1970s to serve Blanchardstown, Mulhuddart and Castleknock.

The existing sewer network does not have the capacity to serve the needs of this fast growing population and is subject to flows which results in untreated wastewater overflows from the sewer network to the River Tolka.

Commenting on the project Paul Fallon, Wastewater Infrastructure Manager at Irish Water said:

“Irish Water is pleased to be progressing this important project for Blanchardstown and the surrounding areas in Meath and Kildare. The proposed project will expand the existing capacity of the wastewater network in the area to facilitate existing and future residential and commercial growth.”

    Irish Water spend a small fraction of the billions provided to them ( & wasted by them) to do a job that the councils previously did minus the fuss & spin. Wow – that’s news now!

    @Setrakian:

    You may not have heard but our water infrastructure is crumbling and is not sustainable. We must invest in it to ensure we continue to have a water supply in the years to come. The work you are saying the councils previously did not fix the underlying issues, it was patchwork and short term.

    @Nick Allen: I haven’t the time to debate with you Nick but we all know the truth of the matter. You are I believe a paid troll who spends his ‘working’ hours spinning on behalf of your political employers. I don’t disagree that our infrastructure requires attention & resources but do tell me – how much revenue has Irish Water taken in vs what they have actually spent on our water systems? This government or its previous incarnation withheld funding for years from councils to carry out necessary work & upgrades to the system – any idea as to why? You know why but obviously you can’t answer truthfully. Now if you’ll excuse me – I’m on my way to work where I do a real job minus the spinning !

    @Nick Allen: The water system is crumbling because as I have already said, the executives overpaid to run it would not know a tap from a tit. Please Google “Irish Water Pollution – Fines – River” and explain your wild fantasy that makes you broadcast that this bunch of idiots are our saviours.

    @Tom Fennelly:

    I don’t know the quality of the water executives but it would not surprise me if they did not understand what they should be doing. My point is not how badly it is managed nor how bad the halfwits running the country are. My point is that I believe we need a centralised system to manage water and it should be paid for on a consumption basis.

    @Nick Allen: a centralised approach is a no brainer. What wasn’t needed was a utility and a billing system. The number of coco need to be reduced.

    @Nick Allen: Nick, please answer this one question. Did you Google “Irish Water Pollution – Fines – River – Sewage” Please tell me the answer to that and if you have done so does it not tell you what you admit that you don’t know when you say you don’t know the quality of the executives in IW? Go on, have an ould google there and have a good read and come back to me and tell me who will be paying the fines – along with paying excessive car tax for water charges and then paying water charges again.

    Well let’s say the government actually do their jobs and ring fence the billions collected by various taxes paid for by everyone and finally end the biggest farce the state has known.

    @ray.farrelly:

    As you know our general taxation goes into a central fund and then each department has to fight for its own budget, there is no money ring fenced for water. So understandable, water will often lose out to things like health and other capital infrastructure projects. But, then again, some people just want a free ride and there is not much society can do about that.

    @Nick Allen: just imagine this. Imagine you own a perfectly good car that is over ten years old and because Fine Gael want to force you to scrap it they charge you almost €2,000 to tax it and then they hand all this money to Irish Water to executives who would not know a yap from a tit. Just imagine last week in SD County Council Fine Gael put forward a motion to raise rent on Council Houses by 60% over 3 years. Just imagine that they are tendering a contract for private bullies to check if everyone has a TV lisence and that if someone is caught mowing a lawn to try and get back on the first rung of the ladder or feed a child you will be named and shamed (illegal in European Law) and then ……See below ….

    try to imagine why, just as these morons are gearing up for holidays why, despite being told we do not have to pay for water (again) why this week Irish Water placed s tender to monitor data from 10,000 locations in the initial 5 year contract and you will have a good picture, maybe one with big Phil the Hulk marching down every street in the country flanked by a 100 sidekicks and they all cracking whips and looking to see your bank statements.

    @Tom Fennelly:

    The government made a complete mess of IW and the initial setup costs look very dodgy indeed and there should be people held accountable for this. My point is that I believe that the country needs a centralised water authority to manage our infrastructure going forward and that people receiving water to their homes should pay a consumption based fee. I also think that the ownership of our water should never be let go out of the State’s ownership. Brining in car tax and TV licence discussions is just and anti government argument and not doing anything about bringing our water infrastructure forward.

    @Nick Allen: 254,000 vehicles a day cross the M50 Toll bridge. There are 11 Toll bridges. How many million a week (multiply trucks and vans charges by 254000) is the M50 making? Is it going to the state – or have Fine Gael just awarded a contract for €200 Million for 5 years to a Spanish company?

    The water system is not crumbling at all.
    In dublins main city maybe but any where outside the M50 should be relatively modern.
    This is most likely not upgrade works but new installation tto allow for massive house building that is soon go get under way.
    Where are they get getting money from any way, theu have no revenue stream.
