Remains found in France confirmed to be Seamus Ruddy

The Newry-born teacher was abducted from Paris in 1985.

HUMAN REMAINS FOUND in France are those of Seamus Ruddy, one of the Disappeared.

A spokesperson for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) said French authorities have confirmed the development.

The remains were found in a forest at Pont-de-l’Arche near Rouen in northern France last week.

The Newry-born teacher was abducted from Paris in 1985 and it is believed he was murdered by the INLA.

‘Tragic search’

Following the discovery of the remains, the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald said: “I hope the discovery of remains in France will move us ever closer to finalising the tragic search for all of the Disappeared.

For a family to be bereaved but denied the opportunity to bury their loved one is a terrible cruelty that is hard to imagine. At this time, I would like to remember all of the families of the Disappeared and the suffering which they have endured. In particular, my thoughts are with those families who still await recovery of the remains of their loved ones.

“I want also to commend the dedicated and ceaseless humanitarian work of the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains and its project team. I assure them and the families of the other Disappeared of my and the Government’s support for their ongoing work.”

The ICLVR recovered the bodies of Brendan Megraw in 2014 and Kevin McKee and Seamus Wright in 2015. The remains of Columba McVeigh, Joe Lynskey and Robert Nairac have yet to be recovered.

Anyone with information on the Disappeared has been asked contact the ICLVR in confidence on 00800 555 85500, by writing to ICLVR, PO Box 10827, Dublin 2, or via its website.

@MaryLoonyMcDonald: You got owned and put back in your box there. Not a very thought out or clever comment. Was it? The fact it was the INLA didn’t prevent your pathetic attempt to troll. Sad.

Thoughts with the family of this poor man.

So few comments on an article about a man who was disappeared. I wonder why that is?

The blue shirts have nothing to gain from this as it was the INLA and not the IRA. We all know they don’t really care about the victims.

@Ciaran Rice: They also forget the many more who were disappeared during the so-called “War of Independence” that they proudly harp on about like it was the good old days. “These men had a mandate” they say. A mandate to murder, bomb, maim, terrorise and disappear. No-one ever got that mandate.
