Flight diverts to Shannon after a passenger dies on board

Last Monday, an 88-year-old man also died on a flight that was diverted to Shannon.

A PASSENGER DIED on a flight that was forced to divert to Shannon Airport yesterday evening.

Air Canada flight AC-849 from London’s Heathrow Airport to Toronto in Canada diverted to the mid-west airport after the crew declared a medical emergency.

The Boeing 777 jet was about 400 kilometers north-west of Mayo when the crew turned around. The flight rerouted to Shannon with cabin crew members battling to resuscitate the elderly woman.

The flight landed safely at 5.15pm and was met by airport emergency services and National Ambulance Service paramedics. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the county coroner informed of the matter.

The woman’s body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem examination is expected to be carried out while efforts are also being made to repatriate the remains to Canada.

The flight continued its journey to Toronto about two hours after landing at Shannon.

Last Monday, an 88-year-old man died after the Delta Air Lines flight on which he was travelling from Amsterdam to the US diverted to Shannon.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s medical diversion was the second in a matter of hours at Shannon.

Earlier, Austrian Airlines flight OS-93 made an unscheduled landing at the mid-west airport after the crew declared an emergency just north of Mayo. The crew reported they had a man on board whom they believed to have suffered a heart attack.

The Boeing 767 jet landed safely at 12.30pm and was accompanied to the terminal by airport fire service vehicles where airport authorities and ambulance paramedics were waiting to board the aircraft. The passenger was assessed at the airport before being removed to hospital by ambulance.

‘Could’ warrant arrest? There’s been 97 allegations. Do they have to pass 100 before they arrest him?

@Ciara Baines: There is no point in issuing any arrest warrant for a case to fail because of *fill in the reason used by his defense team & agreed with by a judge*. Given the brevity of the situation, police & judicial prosecutors will be looking to secure at minimum one conviction. It is a sad truth that the majority of victims will never see a conviction secured for the crime/s perpetrated against them. But they may take some solace at their story being heard, at seeing that no other person becomes a victim, & that the person is convicted for a sexually based crime.

@Felicity Hensen, well maybe or maybe not, there are so many people involved now both victims & people that just said nothing at the time, but this been Hollywood! Well now its a different cattle of fish & it seems they ALL KNEW SO… should be held responsible for covering up crimes against innocent children/victims. Think its called “Aiding & abetting! Just another story about abuse of power!

@Colette Kearns: And this is where caution must be employed, because hearing rumours doesn’t make a person complicit in a crime. The people closest to them who did know, or suspect, their criminal behaviour could be charged, but securing a conviction without substantive evidence would be difficult as they could argue they were also being coerced. And given the systemic nature of this behaviour, the logistics of it would simply overwhelm the judicial system. However, anyone suspected of committing sexually based crimes should be investigated. Position within society should never have allowed people avoid prosecution. Hopefully the difference of modern global interaction & communication will ensure these crimes don’t get PR’d into the archives. We can show support for victims &demand better.

As intriguing as the Harvey Weinstein fiasco may be to some. It is absurd that Irish media are obsessed with reporting constantly on crimes committed by non-Irish people in foreign countries. Unfortunately rapes and murders do indeed occur here yet they never get the sort of coverage these so called celebrities manage to bring after it emerges they are being investigated for some crimes that may or may not have occurred.

@Liam O: It is far easier to cast judgement on those at a distance. As can be seen in the comments sections across these articles, once it’s closer to home, and once it involves the necessity of addressing personal behaviour patterns and possibly involvement or complicity in sexual violence, people have a tendency of reacting with aggression &/or hostility. Some people have no interest in accepting personal responsibility for their actions, or the consequences of transgression/s.

@Deborah Behan: How about all the crimes that occur in Ireland that actually effect Irish people and not foreigners in a foreign country. Plenty of murders occur in Ireland but those being killed tend to be of the ‘lower classes’ so they never get as much coverage as Molly Marten case in the USA for example. It’s quite evident that those who live on a council estate lives are not as important to those more fortunate.

@Kev Creed: Many women don’t report such crimes as although they know they are being sexually exploited they also know that through allowing themselves to be used by such vile men they will stand to further their carers greatly as these men are of great influence. It’s a simple case in many ways of women putting their carers and finances over reporting vile monsters before they have they have the chance to prey on other women.

@Deborah Behan: Yes, women should always report such incidents in order to be prevent further women being exploited in future. If you take off your feminist blinkers for a moment and think logically about what I said then you may be inclined to agree. But somehow I doubt that will happen.

@Liam O: My mother was raped by my father in the 70s. This particular rape was never reported to the Gardai. She was made marry him, because she had become pregnant because of that rape. The subsequent rapes and sexual assaults were also not reported to the Gardai; martial rape wasn’t a crime on the statute books of the Irish State until 1990. During the several times she spoke with legal representatives when seeking a separation, she was advised that the rapes & sexual assaults would have no bearing on any orders issued by a judge. This was from the 90s right up to the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Women do not report rapes &/or sexual assaults for myriad reasons. Based on your assertion regarding Paz & other vicitms, my mother also financially benefitted from being raped.
