'It's embarrassing': LÉ Aisling sold by State for €110k - it's now on the market for nearly €700k

It’s being sold by the Dutch ship broker who bought it earlier this year.

THE DEPARTMENT OF Defence has been accused of an “embarrassing” blunder by selling off the LÉ Aisling for a fraction of the price the State could have received for the Navy vessel.

The ship was sold at auction in Cork for €110,000 earlier this year. It has been put on sale for a starting price of $750,000 (€683,000) by the private seller.

The advertisement states: “Vessel just decommissioned from Naval service and in very good condition. Price will go up as owners will spend money on further improvements. Better be quick… Location: Rotterdam.”

It was put on sale last week.

Sinn Féín’s defence spokesman Aengus Ó Snodaigh said the news comes as an embarrassment for the Department of Defence.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Ó Snodaigh said: “It’s embarrassing that they didn’t do their homework on this. It’s crazy, really. It represents a significant loss to the State. Whoever is valuing the vessel obviously didn’t do their job right.

For a private buyer to be able to come in and flip it for at least six times its value in the space of a few weeks is just madness.

LE AISLING Unlimited Offshore Unlimited Offshore

The vessel was decommissioned three years ago and had clocked up over 650,000 nautical miles during its years on the seas.

The LE Emer was sold for €320,000 in 2013. The difference in prices is being attributed to a collapse in the market.

TheJournal.ie has contacted the Department of Defence for comment.

€110k? Sure the scrap value of the steel would be more than that let alone all the equipment on board. As usual there is no incentive in the public sector to get value for money

I am a retired Marine Engineer with 20 years experience and 10 of them as Chief Engineer on VLCC vessels. I can assure the sceptics on here that a 35 year old ship is only worth the scrap value of the metal after a very expensive dismantling process and dangerous ma and add to that materials have been properly disposed of. Metal fatigue of the structure will be enormous and significant corrosion would also be a factor.

@Pete Brady: It won’t work exactly for the reasons given. Ships aren’t designed to have large numbers of people tramping through them; any museum ship needs extensive & costly modification to accommodate tourists, and then require a lot of upkeep. Many museum ships close due to the costs involved.

We don’t know how much has been spent on it in the last few months. If you had people crawling all over it, you could be spending big bucks. There are probably big costs involving testing and validation of critical systems, nevermind fixing the problems. Probably cheaper to have some systems ripped out and replaced rather than go through every little component, testing integrity, which could take months. (If you bought an old expensive car with a great body, you’d probably pull out and replace all the electrics, you might even break open the engine to examine the condition of gaskets, piston heads, etc.)

It was sold at AUCTION. The state didn’t set a price. That was the highest bid received. The value of anything is what another person is willing to pay for it. And on the day of the auction that is all people were willing to pay. It is annoying, a pain in the bollox, and lots of other stuff. But it is not the states fault. It is not embarrassing.

Always thought it elegant the way the Asgard 2 was scuttle…sunk on September 11 2008. Ireland’s ”9/11” when the Ship of State was sunk by lubbers poltroons pirates and our sovereign and indefeasible destinies sent to Davy Jones yea unto the fifth and sixth generations. What did Willie O’Dea do with the insurance money? He was on about buying a replacement then buying a steel-hulled one and then nothing at all. Haven’t heard a word about the shillings since. Sea-cocks were left open weren’t they? DG nobody drowned.

Defence issues being discussed on the Journal? Ha! Thought I had wandered onto waterfordwhispers website… Apoplectic left going into nuclear meltdown over the disposal of a ship that in their expert view could’ve been maintained as a floating hostel for the homeless. trust me, the last place a homeless person or family wants to live is inside an ageing old dangerous steel ex naval vessel. She was sold for her recycle value as, for after 35 years of honorable service, thats all shes good for now. the helis , lear jet and other items mentioned that were also sold off cheap (it seems) were only sold on by their buyers, at much higher prices, after vast sums of money – which we dont have – were used to relife them and upgrade them.

TWO BIDS – The LÉ Aisling spent 36 years in service before it was decommissioned in June 2016 and sold at auction earlier this year.

There were only two bids for it when the vessel was auctioned in Cork.

It was bought by Dutch ship broker Dick van der Kamp, who said he planned to resell it on the international market.

Auctioneer Dominic Daly, who sold the ship on behalf of the Department of Defence, as well as two other vessels, said significant costs would have been involved in preparing LÉ Aisling for re-sale.Mr Daly told RTE that the cost of towing the ship to Holland and re-classifying the vessel could have run to hundreds of thousands of euros.

He added that naval vessels are sold without classification and have to be re-classified before they can go back into service.
