'Unlock NAMA' building occupation ended by gardaí

Protesters have peacefully left the building in central Dublin, which they had taken over earlier today.

ANTI-NAMA PROTESTERS have vowed to continue their campaign after their occupation of a building said to be owned by Nama was ended by gardaí.

Activists from the Unlock NAMA campaign had taken over the building at 66-67 Great Strand Street in central Dublin and used it for public talks and meetings earlier today.

However, garda officers arrived to clear the premises this afternoon. After a brief meeting, the protesters made the decision to leave peacefully.

“They said it was private property and we had no right to be there,” Unlock NAMA spokesperson Moira Murphy told TheJournal.ie. “We were given an hour to clean up. We’re all out of the building now.”

She said more than 50 people had attended the protest, and it was now planned to repeat the operation in other locations.

“It’s been a success even though it wasn’t the outcome we anticipated,” she said. “We’re hoping to expand the project, get more people involved, and show people how to identify Nama buildings in their local areas.”

According to Murphy, gardaí told protesters that the building was not controlled by Nama. She said their information showed that it was.

A garda spokesperson would only confirm that it was a “privately owned building”. Protesters had departed peacefully, there were no arrests and no investigation was under way, he added.

Another member of the group told TheJournal.ie earlier today that the protest was about “lifting the veil of secrecy around NAMA and making the buildings available to the public,” adding: “It’s a no-brainer to give them a social and community use.”

This video by soundmigration shows a tour around the building while the protest was taking place:

I think another contract by an outsourced development team, contracted by another provider, who can consult on the other contractors contract is required. Or has ESB not done this? Recognition of the Union and pay them fairly. Outsourcing is a race to the bottom by corporations. Keep it cheap for technicians while management lick the cream off the profit’s.

@Twitruser2021: the ESB is a semi-state I’m afraid – whatever profits are made don’t go to “management”.
Existing ESB unions are poison as it is, milking the lot of us. No surprise they don’t want to recognise a new one.

What the ESB are saying is the will only negotiate with “Approved Unions “ those who the company deem appropriate . The day the employer tells the worker who can and Cannot represent them is a bad day for workers everywhere .

@Airwave81: not true, you will fine that it is the original union that won’t let employers recognise competion unions.

Why don’t the company engage in talks with the union? The union is willing to meet them on the matter but they refuse!

@Bull McCabe: I would guess the other unions don’t want a new union infringing on their patch. The official unions will want to be the only workers representatives. Management would be the same, It be a nightmare if dozens of unions popped up and they all want to negotiate separately.

Effectively what they are saying is we have no way to influence this union so we won’t speak to them.

One of the best paid group of employees in the country with pensions to match going on strike, many large european economies have better systems in place with one union representing all company employees, multible unions representing a few thousand employees is ridiculous that no employer wants to have to deal with.
