A garda giving evidence noted that the incident took place not long after the 1916 commemorations. RollingNews.ie

Attacker who glassed man after 1916 celebrations taunted him about being from 'the North'

The attacker was jailed for a year.

A LANDSCAPE GARDENER who attacked a stranger with a glass around the time of the Easter 1916 Commemorations after insulting the man about being from Northern Ireland has been jailed.

Jason Wall (31) of St Patrick’s Close, Monkstown, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting Kieran Nelson causing him harm in Blackrock, Dublin on 27 April, 2016.

He has 14 previous convictions which were all dealt with in the District Court.

Judge Karen O’Connor said it had been a “violent and gratuitous attack” which left the injured party embarrassed by his appearance. She said Wall started being quite offensive in respect of the victim being from Northern Ireland.

She noted €1,000 gathered by Wall by way of redress and his letter of apology. She accepted he had an impressive work record and had not come to any further garda attention.

Judge O’Connor imposed a sentence of two years imprisonment and suspended the final year.

Garda Ciaran Ronan told Martina Baxter BL, prosecuting, that Nelson was bleeding heavily from his head when he arrived at the scene. He claimed he had been attacked by a man with a glass and was taken to hospital for treatment.

He later told gardaí that he had gone out for a pint after work and went to get chips afterwards when he met Wall. Wall said to him “youse in the North are cowards”.

Nelson replied “don’t be silly” in an attempt to diffuse the situation but he described Wall as being “very aggressive”.

They all left the shop at the same time and Wall continued to talk to him in the same manner. The victim got nervous and crossed the road to head to a nearby garda station.

Garda Ronan said Nelson eventually turned around and asked Wall “Is there going to be problem here?” before he was hit in the head with a glass.

Nelson needed stitches for cuts to his forehead and his lip. He was discharged from hospital the next day.

CCTV footage

Garda Ronan said Wall was arrested after he was identified through CCTV footage. He made no admissions during a subsequent garda interview.

A victim impact report stated that Nelson has been left with an obvious scar on his forehead. He also was out of work for a short time. He suffered embarrassment as result of the scar and an economic loss of €900.

Garda Ronan agreed with Lily Buckley BL, defending that Nelson was happy to receive €1,000 which Wall had in court as a token of his remorse.

He accepted that Wall had written a letter of apology and had demonstrated “true sorrow for the incident”.

Garda Ronan further accepted that the assault occurred around the time of the Easter 1916 commemorations and there had been conversation within the group at the chipper “surrounding historical and political lines”.

Buckley told the court that her client doesn’t have any previous convictions for violent behaviour and has not come to garda attention since.

She said Wall was the father of an eight-year-old boy and had significant “personal issues at the time”.

He had been drinking heavily but no longer abuses alcohol. She said he earned “a modest wage” as a landscape gardener.

Nasty cult – should be banned in this country. Their only true belief is in hard cash at terrible cost to their followers.

But if you are scientologist you have no rights..none..women in labour are told to be quiet and not express pain..a most antique religion..and not one that supposedly expresses their “alien” forward godfathers thoughts.

You know what would happen? You’d be locked away for life. But you would still be a member of the RCC. The Church considers those they excommunicate as members of the Church too. Just that they can’t receive any sacrament until they repent. Up until a few years ago you could leave the Church. Now you can’t. All you can do now is avoid the Church and pretend you’re not a member.

They use my membership of the Church (even though I wish I wasn’t a member), and many more like me, to justify them telling everyone else how to live and they do so with a level of authority akin to that of the state.

Scientoligy and its front group CCHR only oppose psychiatry because it is a rival to scientolgy’s own version of psycotherapy. It is as simple as that. Scientology mental health therapy is at best unproven quackery and at worst mind control and thought reform on a sinister level. What is worse is that this fraud is sold under the guise of relgion and thus subject to no regulation.

Little wonder scientology seeks to monopolise mental health treatment. The price of their ‘therapy’ is crippling- financially and emotionally.

Frank was no doubt hoping to be head honcho at the hoped for Ideal Org building in Edinburgh. The city council wisely deemed scientlogists unsuitable tenants for a beautiful civic building and awarded the tenancy to the French Embassy. So now Dublin has an OSA Scientology Scottish reject squatting in Merrion Square. Pathetic.

A very dangerous cult. At least Ireland has not recognised Scientology as a religion like alot of other countries have. Vast majority of their wealth is held in real estate across the world, their new office merrion square for example. Investing in property also gives the impression that the organisation is expanding geographicaly and growing in popularity. The truth is they had to fly people in for the opening event of the new office in merrion square to give the perception that scientology is popular here. Photos from the event up on scientology website , propaganda for followers of the church. They should be kicked out of this country for good.

Their current plan in Dublin is to legitimise themselves with business and civic groups. Their main front groups are CCHR, Narconon, Youth For Human Rights and Drug Free World. They cynicallt and covertly dissseminate scientology in the guise of helping. I think they should be forced to reveal these front groups as scientology and publish the total financial cost of their Bridge To Freedom. Oh and made to refund those they have duped. Shiny Real Estate is their god and profit their prophet.

I can only assume that you don’t really believe what you are saying and are looking for people to take the bait.

Religion is predicated on the requirement to hold a blind and unweavering faith in religious doctrine. It forces people to override critical thought faculties and ingore the substantive body of knowledge of how the world works. Furthermore, it is based on scripture that is often self contradictory and which documents stories that were written 100s of years after the purported events.

If anything religion is nothing but a barrier to freedom of thought, expression and the advancement of knowledge.

Perhaps we should mention the financial position of Church Of Scientology after they paid damages to Mary Johnston for their abusive practices. Hard to believe they still have a presence in Dublin after that. As for the current financial status, it goes to show that even with them being propped by US dollars from the organisations central coffers they have little to show for it. Orgs in the UK and Ireland are kept open for publicity reasons only so scientology can fleece existing members and wrest more cash from them. The new Merrion Square office exists as a base for overseas OSA staff and from it they seek to cynically curry favour with business and civic groups in Ireland in the guise of help. Don’t ever be deluded-scientology has one prophet – profit.

I thought they were supposed to be a religious organisation so what is all this about profits ? Surely they have only one prophet – L Ron Hubbard ? If they are in the black again in Ireland after the huge legal fees they had to shell out for for their abuses then I hope they are getting taxed. Scientology hides behind it’s religious cloaking to avoid taxation and to perpetrate it abuses with impunity. The new office at Merrion Square is a hub for their covert dissemination and has been funded by the coffers in the US. The building itself is a tax evasion scam – Church of Scientology buys up real estate all the time and shoves a few staff in it . They then take glossy photos of their ‘ expansion’ to legitimise their organisation and extract more money from members. Corrupt to the core.
