Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shows Timeline during the f/8 conference in San Francisco. Paul Sakuma/AP/Press Association Images

Attention Facebook users: Timeline will soon be mandatory

If users don’t adopt the social network’s new feature in the next few weeks, Facebook will do it for them…

FACEBOOK USERS WHO have been avoiding the switchover to the new ‘Timeline’ feature will soon have to embrace change – because it’s coming whether they want it or not.

Timeline becomes mandatory in the next few weeks, and will see users’ profile pages change from the established linear format to one which displays photos, video and posts together on a user’s wall according to when the content was created.

So, what do users need to know about the new feature?

Timeline is a kind of ‘digital scrapbook‘, which maps out important moments in a user’s life on the social network by displaying everything that they have ever done on the site in a new visual way – including all their photos, posts, ‘likes’, Facebook apps they use and a map showing locations where they have been tagged.

Facebook even gives the option for users to add information to their Timelines from before they joined the site, so they can go back and add photos or posts about important dates in their life – like when they graduated, got married, or welcomed a new person into the family.

Once you get Timeline, you have seven days to review it and make changes before it is made public, reports SiliconRepublic.com. This gives you the opportunity to do a bit of spring cleaning and scrap potentially embarrassing posts and photos before the new format is seen by friends. Phew.

Criticisms

Concerns about the implications for users’ privacy have been raised by critics of Timeline, as a new default setting means that any post made by a user automatically become public unless marked otherwise. In other words, if a users neglects to choose ‘friends’ in the drop-down audience selector when posting comments or photos, the information can be seen by anyone.

That takes care of new comments and photos – but what about past posts? To make sure that old information is only accessible by your friends, click on the arrow symbol at the top right-hand corner of the Timeline, select Privacy Settings – Limit the Audience for Past Posts – Manage Past Post Visibility and then select Old Posts. In this way, the visibility of older information can managed.

Users who are unsure of how their profile looks to others can check this by clicking on the small gear symbol on the right-hand side of the large banner at the top of their wall: from that drop-down menu, clicking ‘View As’ will show how the profile looks to friends and strangers.

Although many Facebook users have already adopted Timeline willingly, it seems a significant number of the remainder have an overwhelmingly negative impression of the new feature. Recently, security firm Sophos polled 4,000 users about their attitudes to Timeline: 51.29 per cent responded that the feature “worried” them, and a further 32.36 per cent said they didn’t know why they were still on Facebook.

Of those surveyed, just 7.96 per cent said that they liked Timeline – and 8.39 per cent thought they would “get used to it”.

‘Michelle McIlveen told the Assembly at Stormont on Monday that Sands was “not a freedom fighter”, but instead a ”member of a brutal terrorist organisation”

Some terrible things happened during the resistance to a brutal apartheid state. It always happens. When a colonial power subjugates, steals and tries to eradicate the culture of the native population, the kickback is rarely pretty. Some actions will be justified, others will look inexcusable from afar and with the passage of time. It’s much easier to have 20/20 moral vision when you aren’t in the cauldron.

It’s comically selective and an attempt to distract people from the reasons why people like Bobby Sands felt forced to take the actions they did in the first place.
One of the best ways of healing would be more of an acceptance and admission from the likes of the DUP that their people kicked all of this off in the first place. Sure, some dreadful things happened as a result that no one wants to see again, but from The Plantation to The Penal Laws via the gerrymandered two tier state – the civil rights movement didn’t just magically appear for no reason. It’s oh so convenient to associate all Irish resistance with terrorism. It’s what they do every single time. We’ll keep waiting for a bit of self-reflection as to why the likes of the IRA arose. Meanwhile they will indulge in endless British commemorative events about fighting oppressive and murderous regimes. Propaganda writ large.

@Joe Beirne: Thanks Joe. Awful, dreadful, appalling and inhumane things happened that no one wants to see again. It’s just so myopic and selective to only focus on the actions of one side, with never the slightest bit of acknowledgement as to why these resistance movements and groups might have arisen. The fact that someone was willing to starve themselves to death as an act of resistance should leave some fairly hefty clues as to the strength of feeling at the time. The irony as ever, is that if this had been a British person in similar circumstances, there would be a commemorative day and The Sun et al would have a major celebratory splash about it every single year.

@Fergus O’Donnell: Very much so. Did you see the Louis Theroux documentary? It should (even though it won’t) put pay to the idea that being enraged at the actions of the settler movement and the Israeli state is anti-Semitic. Louis is Jewish, of course (atheist, but that’s his heritage), and you could see the bewilderment and sadness in his face listening to the extremists as they dehumanised and justified the robbery and subjugation of the Palestinians. It’s simply not about being anti-Jewish. Anyone with two functioning brain cells realises this would be amoral and wholly wrong. It’s about a murderous faction and regime, nothing more.

Factually inaccurate to state Thatcher introduced internment, she did not. The Heath government did under Operation Demetrius is August 1971. Thatcher was no friend of Ireland, but let’s be factually accurate here. Internment stopped in 1975 and Thatcher became PM in 1979. The removal of political status that would ultimately lead to the hunger strikes was introduced by the Labour government.

@John Doe: Yeah I’m the evil one, read a history book lads, I’m not here to educate you. I bet you all took part in the celebrations of 1916 a few years ago? Or maybe not, you don’t seem the patriot types.

@Alan: He got elected to Westminster and I think his campaign manager then held the seat, so there was a few bob for ” the cause “.

Other than that nothing really, I was about 15 when he died and thought that a resolution might be found after him and the others gave their lives. But no, the killing simply escalated and still achieved nothing.

Maybe some of the legal costs in obtaining planning permission could be sorted if the statue was sponsored by KFC.
