Sky to create 800 new jobs in Dublin

Some much-needed good jobs news.

DIGITAL TV PROVIDER Sky is to create 800 new jobs in Dublin over the next two years.

The company is to open a customer service centre in the city in August 2012 to meet the demands of its Irish customers.

The centre will be located at the Burlington Plaza and Sky says it will allow it to serve its Irish customers from “one dedicated site for the first time”.

Recruitment will begin immediately to fill the positions, which range from customer service management to HR positions.

This is the initial stage of a wider expansion which will see 1,300 jobs added to its staff rota across the UK and Ireland by 2014. Sky currently provides its products to 10.5 million homes across the UK and Ireland.

The announcement has been welcomed by the Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton and IDA Ireland.

[Update] It is understood that the jobs announcement will not affect positions at a Cork company which is contracted to carry out sales operations for Sky.

A spokesperson for Abtran told TheJournal.ie that the company supports Sky’s sales operations and does not provide customer service – which will be the central focus of the new Dublin centre.

I recently upgraded to Sky HD, never before have the words “no satellite signal is being received” been so clear and sharp.

Dish needs realignment or the cables not terminated correctly I’d say. Most of the sky installers are useless and haven’t a clue. It’s not that the HD service is bad as it works perfect. I suggest you get a decent satellite guy to sort it out.

Yeah, either the cabling or the dish alignment. You need two cables with independent paths to the LNB on the dish for each Sky Plus/HD box. Cables should not be too long either. Can´t remember the limit.

I’d a similar problem, after a while (4 years) I figured out it was the cable at the dish that wasn’t connected properly. Reason I always thought this was a sky error I’d seen two friends units with the same error. If this makes sense to anyone, The error I’d get on the channel 4′s when you record you then cant record e4 or film 4. Problem solved now anyway.

i’ve done the same – the picture quality is better too, even in standard definition. Two minor things; can’t get rte/tv3 on Freesat+; can’t multiroom the freesatbox without extra kit. For now, have put an extra cable in from dish to network old Sky+ box on free channels; considering getting Saorview box for rte. The payback period on not being fleeced by the skypirates is less than a year!

Think it’s pretty obvious why? It’s not positive if the jobs are being moved from one city to another. Jobs could be lost in cork to facilitate this great news in dublin. If its 800 spanking new jobs, then it’s fantastic news, and I’ll stand corrected. However I’ll reserve judgment on the press release till we know that these are NEW jobs and not some spin!

Are abtran losing the contract then? If so it really is robbing from Peter to pay Paul? Granted there won’t be 800 job losses in abtran but surely if sky decide not to outsource to them anymore there will be some job losses there?

Exactly! Reading RTE’s report on this you would think that SKY has no existing customer contact centre here in Ireland:

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0131/sky.html
“Currently, enquires in Ireland are routed to contact centres in Livingstone and Dunfermline in Scotland.”

I work in the same technology park as Abtran and I would say Sky accounts for a large proportion of those employed there. As you said Diarmuid, is this case of moving existing jobs from one part of the country to another?

Micheál Martin been leader of Fianna Fáil since January 2011 would suggest that not too many jobs will be heading to Cork or other non Fine Gael/Labour areas in the future IMHO. Fine Gael/Labour got massive support in Dublin the last election, I hope i’m wrong as jobs need to spread through out the countries job black spots.

I don’t know what election statistics you’re basing your argument on. Fine Gael/Labour won 68% of the Cork seats and 74% of the Dublin seats. That’s not a significant difference. Most of the Dublin seats are Labour’s and they have less say in the government than Fine Gael.

FG only holds 36% of the Dublin seats but has 47% of the seats in Cork!

Very much wondering what will happen to the staff in Cork. While a large number of people live in Dublin. It does concern me an awful lot of the recent job creations have been in Dublin. Surely the IDA should attempt more to encourage these companies to move out of the capital and to other cities. Why was Dublin chosen over Cork where the Sky staff are already they are already trained up on their systems etc. or why not Waterford with all the unemployed call centre staff????
