From tree houses to museums: Public asked to vote for Ireland's favourite building

The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland wants your opinion.

MEMBERS OF THE public have been asked to vote for their favourite building, place or public space designed by an Irish architect.

The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) has chosen a shortlist of 60 houses, offices, schools and colleges, heritage locations and public spaces in its Public Choice category ahead of its 2017 awards ceremony, which will be held on 23 June.

Now in their 28th year, the RIAI Irish Architecture Awards are the primary architectural awards in the country.

The Public Choice shortlist includes a number of categories, such as best commercial building, best educational building, house of the year and a sustainability award.

Here is a selection of the buildings and places on the shortlist:

While Dublin is strongly represented with 32 buildings or places on the list, there are entries from 13 counties across Ireland, including two from Northern Ireland.

There are three international entries – in Hungary, Poland and Palestine – all of which were designed by RIAI-registered architects.

You can view the full shortlist and vote here. Voting closes at midnight on 16 June.

How can one win an architecture award just on good location? The Kilsallagh one and the Marconi station are just good locations with nothing of architectural interest.

Most of them are hidious (especailly the modern ones) and completely impractical, (flat roofs in Ireland just means the designer has no grasp on reality) Are the older better quality desgins going to the original designers, or the nesw ones whove just stuck a few panes of glass in and cleaned the stonework?
