POLICE IN LONDON have released pictures of the blood-soaked fake suicide vests worn by the London Bridge attackers.
The attackers - Khuram Shazad Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba - were shot and killed last Saturday night after they drove a van through pedestrians on the London Bridge and stabbed others nearby, killing eight and injuring scores of others.
During the attack, they wore suicide belts designed to make the public and police believe they would detonate themselves if approached.
All three of the attackers wore the leather belts. Each had three disposable water bottles covered in masking tape attached to the belt. The belts were still attached to the suspects when they were shot dead.
Met Police Commander Dean Haydon, who is leading the investigation, said that the tactic was new in the UK, but the fakes were realistic.
Anyone who saw them on the night would have thought they were genuine. It is hard to speculate what the motive was for wearing the belts. It could be that they had plans to take the attack in to a siege situation or it might be that they saw it as protection from being shot themselves.
“It makes the bravery of those police officers and members of the public who tackled the terrorists even more remarkable. The belt would have been visible to them and if you are fighting back or aiming a shot at someone wearing the device you would clearly be very aware that you could be caught in an explosion.”
Police recovered a number of items from the van:
Officers have so far spoken to 262 people from 19 different countries in connection with the attacks. Of these, 78 are significant witnesses. 18 people have been arrested.
They believe there will be many others who witnessed the incidents who have yet to speak to police, and are asking them to come forward.

@Matty Killucan: have to agree. By wearing these belts the attackers insured that they would never be taken alive; the police had no choice but to shoot them dead to prevent them detonating a potential bomb.

It’s also perfectly plausible that once they were on foot as knife-only attackers they realised that they were vulnerable to being quickly overwhelmed if a crowd decided to rush them, so they may have calculated that wearing a fake suicide vest as a deterrent against this would allow them to prolong the duration of their murderous rampage.
I think it’s pretty much a given that this was a suicide mission – their aim was to kill as many as possible before being killed themselves, so why would they want it to be cut short?

@Avina Laaf: There’s no doubt that would have been a bonus element, but it’s highly implausible that it was the primary reason.

What makes you say that?
I think it’s pretty implausible that they wanted to encourage cops to shoot them – I’m sure they realised that this ‘mission’ would end in their deaths anyway, but they wanted to take as many others with them as possible. Ergo they wanted it to last as long as possible, not deliberately try to get killed as soon as possible. This wasn’t just a simple ‘suicide by cop’.
@Avina Laaf: They were armed with knives, the police would not need to fatally wound them to stop their rampage, they could shoot them in the legs or even just tazer them to immobilise them. As I said I’m not doubting the deterrent effect that the vests would have had, but their primary means of “being scary” was surely crashing a van into people and then running around waving knives and stabbing people. I’d be interested to find out whether or not they kept their vests concealed until the police arrived.

@Dave O Keeffe: No. Your assertion was that they USUALLY contain a dead man’s switch. Of course they do in some cases, if only to prevent someone from backing out of a mission. In this case it is highly implausible that they wouldnt use them. The reason being, that they would need to maintain pressure on a switch whilst stabbing people with knives in each hand. Not very practical.

@Dave O Keeffe: If you’re about to suggest that suicide bombers often have devices monitoring a vital sign eg their pulse, then I think perhaps that you’re over thinking it. IEDs are often crude and poorly made. Adding such a device adds a level of sophistication that is highly impractical and only adds to the likelihood of premature detonation. If you know anything about system design, you’d know that more components equals more possible failure points. It’s very simple, armed with knife-shoot to immobilise, armed with suicide vest-shoot to kill.

Shooting people in the legs only happens in hollywood. In the real world police are trained to shoot at ‘centre mass’ (torso) to mimimise the chance of missing and to maximise stopping power.

There were obviously a number of factors at play as to the reasons behind the fake vests, but that was most definitely one of them.
