Saw him on a ferry nearly 22 ago. Seen him walk into shopping centre in Dublin 13 years ago. Just coincidence. Very rare to see anyone that was off the telly then walking around like an ordinary Joe bloggs.

Sad,I just googled him the day before yesterday, and loved his waterways shows and newspaper articles. Saw him stocking up once in Tesco Maynooth during a wine sale. I think I recall Derek Mooney mentioned staying over and eating curry one Christmas for dinner! There are not many characters like Dick left who care more for the environment than profit.

A man filled with infectious wonder for the natural world. He made the Irish waterways look like tributaries of the Amazon! A great man who managed to open our eyes on places we turned our backs on.

Dick Warner had a voice you could listen to all day. He was brilliant at making things we take for granted like stretches of canals and rivers sound so exotic and fascinating. He was an amazing man and his work is fondly remembered by many. RIP

I remember reading somewhere that RTE sold Waterways all over the world where it was mostly used as a teaching aid for people learning English, which was a great tribute to his erudition and ability to communicate.

Rip Mr Warner. Really liked the man. Loved the waterways show. I know this is a bit silly but he posted a recipe on the rte guide many years ago for a French toast sandwich. And we tried it out and it was divine. Every week or so we have a “dick Warner sandwich”.. So his name will live forever in our house.

@Conor McKenna: Make a tomato, ham, cheese and mustard sandwich with your favourite bread. Beat some egg and milk. Dip the sandwich into the egg/milk. Fry on a medium heat in butter. Garnish with flat leaf parsley. Enjoy with a cuppa.

Dick Warner was a pioneer in the media of television he championed our neglected waterways which were near collapse and brought their magic into our living rooms with his erudite commentary. He was our very own Green Guru an environmentalist a outdoorsman a gentle soul and throughly lovely man who highlighted his Country’s rustic charms.
