Dublin Bus to increase pre-paid ticket prices

The cost of daily and weekly tickets is set to rise, weeks after a hike in cash fares.

Updated, 6.25pm

DUBLIN BUS IS set to increase the price of its pre-paid tickets, weeks after raising cash fares by 15 per cent.

The cost of Rambler, Travelwide and Travel 90 tickets – all of which allow users to take a number of journeys in a limited time – will rise by an average of 5.6 per cent.

Approving the increase, the National Transport Authority said it was necessary in order to maintain a balance with the increased cash fares.

The largest increase was to the 10-journey Travel 90 ticket, which increased from €19 to €21.50 – a 13.2 per cent hike.

In a statement, Dublin Bus said: “While the current heavily discounted fares, unfortunately, are no longer sustainable at the current rate, prepaid tickets do continue to provide excellent value for money.”

The company also said it plans to integrate all prepaid tickets into the Leap card system later this year.

Last December, Dublin Bus announced that it would increase cash fares by an average of 15 per cent from January 1, with a five per cent increase for Leap card customers.

We only own a small portion of CIE. The rest of their funding comes from the tickets they sell and the old buses and trains that they resell on to other countries when we have had the use of them. We have the dubious honour of being the only country in Europe who’s public service is not two thirds funded by their governments. As costs go up in CIE so do the fares unfortunately.

I can see it now, the government will introduce a let’s get Ireland walking campaign but put tolls on the foot paths and a new walking shoe charge, it won’t be a tax though! just a small increase in the price of comfortable walking shoes to guarantee manufacturers quality.

What actually calls for this required increase? They’ve cut the routes, slashed services, and provide nothing more than the minimum that’s required, so why the increase? The truth of it is, the current bus riders are subsidising the loss in numbers that they enjoyed in the heyday. Services suck and the users get stuck. Happy days.

No wage cuts in Dublin bus and in fact wage increases is reason why it’s going up. While public service are announcing loads of retirements and less money for new comers what are Dublin bus doing? ? ?

VAT went up and I’m not sure if you’ve noticed the steady increase of prices at petrol stations. I’d imagine these are contributing.

I hate these leap cards! As someone who needs to get 2 buses to and from
work the rambler card saved me an average 20 euro a week! With the leap card I would only save 5 a week as you still pay per journey!

It will end when people realise that it is not worth their while to go to work any more. I.E. When people have less money after paying income tax, bus/train/luas fares, household charge, car tax etc, than they would have if they stayed at home on the dole.

Thanks Andy.. Already have, and the NTA.. Email and by phone.. It gets rather frustrating never getting anywhere..

The bus I need to get to work on certain days of the week is being cut so that my travel time to work doubles because I have to make other arrangements. It screws me up being able to get back and so loses me money As I can’t schedule appointments in the time I have to feck about getting 2 buses home instead of one – and that one was rare enough.. Now they wanna raise the prices, make the buses less frequent (and in contrast to network directs stated aims – less direct) and have some drivers that I am nervous trusting to drive the bus safely..

They really don’t give a toss..

    I’ve aired

I’ve noticed since the introduction of leap that it’s getting harder to buy rambler tickets..

Many of the places I tried said that now they had leap they didn’t see the point in keeping them both in stock, I guess they saw the ramblers as redundant because the assumption is there that they would have launched the Leap system with a daily price cap!

It’s a shame, the leap card would indeed be handy for me if it had this function built in from the start.. I’ll look forward to when it actually makes sense to have one for me as I think it’s a great idea.

Look at swords express I thought that was going to sort things out, They finish at 9 dont operate sunday or bank holidays,
Like all private companies, when it comes to making a profit we all pay more. Make no mistake about it.

The swords express is a fantastic service. It finishes at 11 and it does operate on a sunday. Also, it also uses the port tunnel which dublin bus doesn’t (bar a few express buses from swords to the city centre only, but that’s another story)

@ Tom: I’ve had the complete opposite experience with a private operator. The fantastic Wexford Bus launched a few years back, with services direct to Dublin Airport from Wexford. Bus Eireann later decided to radically increase the amount of buses it had travelling the Dublin route, and also ensured they started and ended at the airport. Although I thought for a while Wexford Bus could get into trouble from the dominant position of Bus Eireann, they have thrived and so competition has provided a better service overall.

Without competition, I couldn’t ever have seen CIE deciding off their own back to improve frequency and add on the airport stop.

3rd price increase in 12 months, the leap card system is a joke, no value for money and the queues are as long as ever. Rambler was the only good thing on Dublin bus, but of course they are getting rid of it and raise the prices in the mean time. Great country this is!!!

(bar real time signs, the one at my stop has yet to be activated, 8 months after being installed). When will they stop the increases? As long as I remember they’ve kept them as an annual occurrence at least.

I agree with Daragh, bike is a great option. Cycle a couple of days a week and get the bus the rest – work out the savings then!
The thing I don’t understand is that buses are fuller than ever due to cuts in routes and less 2 car families, therefore DB should be making more out of the recession, right? Then why the need for increases?!

If I could use a bike I so would but I have 4 stone of equipment to bring with me to work and it wouldn’t fit on a bike!!
Agreed though the service has not improved.. Network “Direct” has made it more difficult for me to get from A to B and results in me having to get 4 buses instead of two on certain days.
Theres now no bus from anywhere further south than Cherrywood to St Vincent’s hospital – the 45 is gone (if not this week next week) and the 84 taking over will only be once in a blue moon and go to Blackrock!
And as for the 45 fiasco, they won’t even let people know.. The drivers have given regulars a heads up but this service is being cut entirely on the sly because of the backlash Dublin Bus anticipates from its withdrawal.. the drivers have even got in trouble for letting users know they need to start planning alternative routes now..

Do you honestly think Dublin Bus cares if you email them? They dont care if you petition them, or gather outside their offices protesting.. Doesn’t mean I won’t continue to air my grievances with them by email.. But I never hold any hope that it’ll do anything.. I have it on good authority that they simply don’t care..

the price hikes are big alright, but expected in the wake of soaring fuel costs. this time last year deisel was about 1.25 a litre. my advice to people on prepaid; go and buy about 10 tix now before they go up! I have a leap card now and It’s rubbish. it costs more per journey than using a travel 90 on the bus, and unbelievably you can’t top it up in the dart stations. 20 million in consulting for a totally half baked system, there’s another reason your fares are so high. as the man says, bike is best, and would be better if Dublin city council members actually cycled more themselves!

Tom, it costs €4 peak and €3 off peak and there are monthly tickets also which work out cheaper. Dublin Bus should be allowed to use the tunnel and I have to say that situation is laughable. However, I prefer the comfort, speed and customer service on the SE. They also have live gps positions which you can check on your phone. Also the drivers are way friendlier and will stop for you if you don’t make it to the stop in time. My experience with DB has been the complete opposite.

This goverment wants to cut the money to the service. In reality if you own a bus company and its loosing money from fuel ,maintance , a driver, free tracel what would you do. Private company again remember. all you rely on is fares.
