    @Shane Fleming: When I was in college, 10m a mile for motorway was a rough figure. That’s 25 years ago, so it doesnt seem crazy. Junctions and bridges are a significant amount of the cost- if a motorway was from city to city with no exits, it would probably be half the “normal” price.

    Great news for Sligo.
    Does anybody know if Dublin city council has a budget to repair/resurface the roads in their area?
    DLRD roads are in excellent condition compared to DCC, some of which are in a deplorable state of neglect. North Frederick Street is a disgrace as is the roundabout at the East link and George’s street is a total mess. Year in, year out and nothing done with them. That’s just an example of 3 road’s. Hundreds need to be resurfaced around the city.

    On the N24 between Mooncoin and Carrick on Suir, there has been at least 10 fatal accidents and numerous serious injuries since it opened 15 years ago.
    It’s a shockingly badly designed road. 3 lanes with alternate passing sections for each lane of traffic. And the dreaded steel rope divider median.
    If ever a road needed upgrading, it’s this one.

They are cheap though so makes sense our lot starting to use something others have deemed unfit for purpose. To show consistency in all departments. In schools here they changed maths to a syllabus abandoned about 4 years earlier in U.K. as it was proved useless.

    Good to see something north of the midway line getting a proper budget, now if it weren’t for generations of apathy from government, how many less crosses would there be by roadsides in the north west? When a county the size of Kilkenny is historically getting more than Donegal that kind of gives a truer perspective. Shocking roads in Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon as well. How much more could they do with the overspend in The National Children’s hospital? Which should NEVER EVER have been shoehorned into the Mater site.

    @Grant Masterson: No, the upgrade will be to a dual carriageway. According to Sligo CoCo website, the project includes:

    14.71km of Type 2 Dual Carriageway;
    New side roads (including in some cases parallel links) and upgrading of existing roads;
    One at-grade roundabout junction on the mainline;
    One Compact Grade Separated Junction on the mainline;
    Three at-grade roundabout junctions on side-roads;
    Four road overbridges;
    Six road underbridges;
    Two river bridges;
    Culverts and associated diversions of existing minor watercourses and drainage ditches;
    All the necessary drainage works associated with the proposed road development;
    The diversion of services and utilities;
    Earthworks operations including the management of spoil generated by the proposed road development;
    Environmental mitigation works;

    The current road is narrow, no verges, peoples houses front directly onto it, hidden dips, sharp bends, uneven surface, basically a death trap. You cannot let your concentration lapse for a second or you’ll be in the ditch as some have sadly found out. This road is long overdue and construction starts next month.

    In regards to the cost, I can see why it costs so much with all the above being needed as well as all the land acquisition costs along the route. As a Sligo native I can’t wait for this to be done.
