Drones are going to be used to tackle the 'scourge' of illegal dumping

It will happen on a pilot basis.

SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY Council will use drones to tackle illegal dumping in Clondalkin.

Responding to a motion put before the Clondalkin area committee meeting this week, the council said that a suite of measures would be used to tackle dumpers.

Sinn Féin’s Mark Ward put forward a motion saying that dumping was a “scourge” in the Clondalkin LEA, calling for the use of drones on a pilot basis.

Council management agreed that the dumping was as bad as Ward laid out and said that a host of ideas would be used to tackle it.

“We are currently examining the potential of emerging technologies to perform the monitoring, recording and retrieval of illegal dumping activities which will assist in the capture and prevention of illegal dumping.

“It is envisaged that drones will form part of those technologies subject to meeting required permits / permissions / training / restrictions etc.”

Ward said that the council should look at every possible solution and welcomed the plan to use drones.

“I have already received assurances from the Council that they will install €35k CCTV in St Cuthberts Park and this will help detect the illegal activity.

The use of new technologies such as drones I believe would hinder illegal dumping and lead to more prosecutions. I welcome the fact that the executive of the council are on the same page as me and mirror my sentiments.

“High risk or problem areas can be identified, followed by enhanced enforcement measures.”

Jail sentences required for this. If they don’t respect our countryside they shouldn’t be free to enjoy it. And crush their car/van.

Maybe if every household had to have a pre paid contract with a bin company it would end, if they can force every household to have a tv licence…..

@Finbarr Barry: Local Property Tax is paid for by house owners who usually tend to their own grass cutting, so why should they pay for everyone else’s grass to be cut or bins emptied.

The fallout of privatisation, where the company’s keep inflating the prices, and look back when the councils had it, if rubbish was left on the side of the road the drivers would stop and collect it doesn’t happen now, and both don’t give a toss.

Could have used them lastnight with all that illegal burning of plastic on every farm in the country. Using the excuse of Bonfire night to poisin the air – ignored by authorities.
