Gardaí called to Oberstown over 'disturbance' involving residents

Two incidents were resolved successfully, said the director of Oberstown.

GARDAÍ HAD TO be called to Oberstown Children Detention Campus over an incident involving a number of residents on Thursday.

Another incident had occurred the day previously, but gardaí were not called.

A statement from the centre said that Pat Bergin, director of Oberstown, can confirm that two incidents took place this week, which caused disturbance on the campus.

“Procedures were initiated to address the situations which were managed well by staff,” said the statement.

Due to the perceived level of risk on one occasion, the assistance of the gardaí was requested by the director.
Both incidents were resolved successfully and the director extends his appreciation to staff and the gardaí for the safe and cooperative manner in which the situations were concluded.

These incidents are the subject of a garda investigation, concluded the statement.

Why is it every time there is a disturbance there the Garda are called. Are the people there not able to manage these children ? Is it not time to hand these brats back to prison officers . We don’t here Garda going into Mountjoy after every disturbance.

@John Scott: Because they are staffed with hug a thug social workers instead of trained prison officers. If the social workers can’t strip them of every last sense of responsibility and convince them that it’s all society’s fault they keep throwing Playstations at them until they hug back. Failing the Playstation Method, they call the guards and then file a complaint when the guards do their job.

@Jimmy Ireland: pretty accurate but the staff were never intended to deal with the type of lowlifes that are there. It was blind, naive fools closing at pat’s that are to blame

The staff in there are top class and do everything in their power to help and grow these kids. Unfortunately the new breed of kid at 16 is 6 foot and has no remorse in himself at all add the level of violence they tend to use it’s a no win situation fir the staff
