THE LIBERTIES AREA in Dublin is set to undergo a major regeneration in the coming years, which will include a big hotel, an indoor market, a micro brewery, office space and residential accommodation.
The regeneration would be focused on the Newmarket Square area and would involve the demolition of the enterprise centre there that dates back to the 1970s.
According to the proposals outlined today by the Newmarket Partnership, the development would create 1,700 permanent jobs upon completion.
A spokesperson for the plan said: “Newmarket Square and adjoining streets are the heart of Dublin’s Liberties but have suffered significant neglect in recent decades.
Much of the regeneration we are planning would involve replacing 1970s enterprise and factory units with mixed use development comprising a hotel, new retail and office space and accommodation.
In full, the project would see the construction of a 239 bedroom hotel, a large indoor market, a micro brewery, retail and office space and residential accommodation.
These regeneration works would complement the popular tourist attraction of Teeling Distillery which is based on the site, and would also complement the €2.3 million upgrade works proposed by Dublin City Council, the spokesperson said.
They added: “Newmarket Square has witnessed a re-birth thanks to the Teeling Distillery and some outdoor markets but we believe now is the time to transform the old enterprise centre into a residential and retail hub.”
Planning permission applications for the works are in the process of being lodged with Dublin City Council.
