Local TD Darragh O’Brien described the death as a “tragic incident”.

“This is a very tragic incident, and while the full details of what happened aren’t yet known, we all need to look after our friends on nights out,” he said.

I will be closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds and will remain in regular contact with the Gardaí in Swords and Coolock.

The road has been closed from the junction of North Street/Seatown Road to North Street/Entrance to Carnegie Court Apartments.

Some mothers son, maybe a brother, an uncle or a father himself beaten to death yet again on the streets of Ireland. It’s become an all too common an occurrence, but what do you expect with an undermanned police force, especially at night time. And a judicial system that hands out suspended or very light sentancing for this kind of offence. We all know for decades that the system needs changing, successive governments have made promises and reneged on them. We really need a Justice minister and government who’ll come in and shake the whole policing and judicial system to the core. Wishful thinking, right?
    May he RIP

Swords has a reputation for being a rough place at night.Certain pubs are open too late and the one nearest the garda station is the worst for trouble after closing.3.30 in the morning is ridiculous to be open in suburbia and midweek too. What a horrible thing to happen.so sad.

@gerry fallon: What a load of rubbish. Moved to Swords from Malahide 10 years ago so I could buy a place. Its perfectly safe. No different then falling out of Gibneys at all hours!

In fact iv seen more violence in Malahide on hot summer days when the scrotes come to town to get hammered on the beach!

The unfortunate gentleman who died a few weeks ago in the underground car park in Swords died due to a tragic accident. I have lived in swords now for 4 years and it is perfectly safe, very well established town fantastic restaurants, shops, hotels, bars, parks and people. Fantastic facilities and schools for children. God rest the poor gentleman who lost his life last night and really it shouldn’t be about where it happened it should be about what happened and the support given to his family and friends to cope with their loss. Rip

Problem is as usual no Garda to be seen at night, despite there’s Garda station at the doorstep – underpaid and under resourced.
I wouldn’t say Swords is bad place, but definitely it’s not as safe as some people say here. Few suspicious deaths over last years, family home raided by gang with chainsaws… etc. And like everywhere in Ireland – lot of dodgy teenagers around with nobody having control over them. Rip to the guy.

@gerry fallon: Do you work for the Herald or RTE? Swords getting a bad name but nothing said about the filth in the station more interested in the foreign element than the locals.

Been in some scrapes over close to 40 years. Very calm town compared to others in fact bar the odd oddball which we have, who can’t and could never handle their drink, this is a safe town. Where do you live?

But where are the Gardai we have?
Recent experience suggests that they spend too much duty time at court, in droves, wasted by nole prosequis, adjournments, no shows & appeals.
Swords cop shop is on the Main Street, yet it is aons since I saw one on the beat.
Probably parked outside the night club.

Surely it’s not Gardai duty to put life and limb at risk trying to talk sense to a person boozed up to the gills, spoiling for a fight and wanting to demonstrate their manliness at all hours of the morning.

In fact, better that they steer clear, adopt a low profile, not to exacerbate tense isolated situations.

Better that all folks take personal responsibility for alcohol intake and not overindulge to the extent of becoming comatose or aggressive. Pubs also have responsibilities not to keep lashing it out to folks who already have had their fill.

Everybody with a propensity for alcohol overindulgence in our Society needs sober close friends and family to monitor, manage and protect them from themselves. That’s not job of An Gardai Siochana.

RIP to that unfortunate man who died !
