Former US presidential candidate John McCain diagnosed with brain cancer

McCain has been one of the more moderate Republican voices in Washington DC during the first six months of Donald Trump’s presidency.

US SENATOR AND former Republican presidential candidate John McCain has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

80-year-old McCain had been absent from Washington DC in recent days after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour and blood clot from above his right eye last Friday.

The veteran Arizona senator’s absence had proven especially problematic for Republican lawmakers in recent days as they tried desperately to get some form of their Obamacare replacement bill through the Senate, a bid that has now ended in failure in McCain’s absence.

McCain’s tumour is known as a glioblastoma – a highly aggressive cancer that begins in the brain.

It had initially been reported that the surgery had been merely to remove the aforementioned blood clot, but in the intervening days rumours had abounded that McCain’s condition was more serious.

A statement from his office stated that he and his family are “reviewing further treatment options”.

“Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation,” the statement said.

The senator’s doctors say he is recovering from his surgery ‘amazingly well’ and his underlying health is excellent.

McCain has proven to be a rather moderate voice on the Republican side of Washington DC in the six months since President Donald Trump took office, and has frequently (along with fellow rebel senator Lindsey Graham) expressed criticism for Trump’s more extreme policies and his behaviour on social media.

Speaking in light of McCain’s diagnosis, Graham said that the disease “has never had a more worthy opponent”.

McCain ran for the US presidency against Democrat opponent Barack Obama in the 2008 US election, with controversial governor of Alaska Sarah Palin as his running mate.

In the event, he won 173 electoral college votes versus Obama’s 365.

One of my students did his history leaving cert project on his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Such a strong person to survive the plane crash, broken legs, torture, and years of captivity. But to Trump he’s not a hero as he was captured.

    @Stan Stynes:

McCain should be indicted in the Hague for war crimes, notably for his involvement in the coup in Ukraine. McCain hasn’t ever seen a US war of aggression (illegal under UN and Nuremburg) that he didn’t like. Frankly, good riddance to the man, sooner the better.

@Cormac Ó Braonáin: His ‘admission’ that he committed war crimes isn’t exactly an admission.

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/mccain/warcriminal.asp

A quote of his during an interview was taken out of a very important context – his captors forced him into a confession of these alleged war crimes against his will.

Regardless, there’s no doubt he, like the US army in general, were out doing very bad things in Vietnam. I don’t think the name war criminal suits him, however, when we can’t even get that title to stick to people like Henry Kissinger (who was instrumental in prolonging the misery of the Vietnamese people in order to further his own political ambitions).

Before he’s a Senator or war veteran, he’s a husband and father. We all need to place that first in our minds. Maybe that is the difference between the political activists of all hues that destroy our world, and the rest of us that have to clean up the messes they make. They see the monster, we see the person.

While I wish his party frustration of their goals, I wish him a speedy recovery. If you can’t make that distinction, that says more to me about you than it does about him.

@Stan Stynes: They nick named him ‘songbird McCain’ – he stabbed his fellow prisoners of war in the back, just like he continueds to do to the American people of his Country. He’s killed more U.S. servicemen single-handily than most of America’s single enemy adversaries. Which leads me to believe he is a murderous traitor. Many good fellow soldiers lost their lives because of this hot-head coward.

@Patrick Kavanagh: There are quite a few stances McCain took that I strongly disagree with, mostly his strong support for the Saudi military, however the POW thing is a complete non-issue.

There have been countless investigations into the idea that there were hundreds of live POWs left behind in Vietnam and it’s quite obvious that such a thing is untrue. Claiming he stabbed POWs in the back is madness – the man has led the most comprehensive investigation into the accusations yet and has been a vocal opponent of the CIA’s torture of their prisoners. Calling him a ‘murderous traitor’ is just outrageous, you haven’t brought up anything to substantiate that claim
