A new survey commissioned by An Garda Síochána says 92% of people trust the force

The figures will now be released every quarter.

GARDAÍ HAVE CLAIMED that 92% of the public have a mid-to-high level of trust in the force despite frequent controversies.

The research, conducted by independent survey company Amárach on behalf of An Garda Síochána, is nationally representative meaning that people from different areas and of different means are asked to respond.

The first three months of this year saw the force embroiled in the breath-test scandal where gardaí admitted that nearly a million tests recorded on the Pulse system never actually happened.

However, this admission came at the end of March just as researchers were finishing asking 1,500 people what they made of gardaí.

Head of the Garda Analysis Service, Dr Gurchand Singh, said that if you look at the statistics, it would appear that any fallout from the breath-test scandal would most likely be seen in next quarter’s stats.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Singh said: “When this got into the public consciousness, it would have been in the latter part of March. We’re thinking now that if there was going to be a reaction due to the breath tests, then it would impact in quarter two.”

Other results included:

  • 74% said they were either very satisfied or satisfied with the service provided by gardaí – up 12%.
  • 67% reported that their fear of crime had no impact on their quality of life – a 10% increase from Q1 in 2016.
  • 21% of respondents considered crime in their local area to be a very serious or serious problem. This is compared to 27% in the same period last year.

Around 60% of people thought the organisation was modern or progressive , 55% said it was effective in tackling crime while 43% said it was well-managed.

Singh added that the trust in Garda management does not specifically mean confidence in the Commissioner or her assistants.

Instead, Singh added that this level of satisfaction can be linked to those in local divisions who would be seen by the public as management.

Deputy Commissioner of Policing and Security John Twomey welcomed the statistics.

He said: “The reduction in the number of people who reported their crime to gardaí and the improvement in satisfaction with the service we provided to victims shows the importance of our strong focus on tackling key crimes and on the victims of crime.”

Well it’s not the fault of the “ 77,000 people it’s the f**kin fault of the people we pay heavily in our hard earned taxes we’ve put in charge & god forbid they would every take responsibility ! The country is a disgrace & seriously if we added up the amount of money leaving this country & also take into account the billionaire tax evaders & made them pay more ( it would be a drop in the ocean to them) then maybe it would be a fantastic place to live in for everyone!

@james r: don’t be fooled by blaming millionaires left, right and centre, this is down to the small local councillor in each of these areas who are either not doing enough or passing the buck. If raw sewage is flowing down the road in a tiny town in West Donegal, it’s the local councils job to ensure it gets improved, and of necessary take legal action against Irish water to instigate EPA fines costing more than the improvements. Seriously, every single person on here blaming “bogey men” – look at the banks, look at the politician on €100k : look closer to home.

@I love dogs: IL repeat my comment to you on the other article!
Of course as population increases the capacity of water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants need to be increased and this requires investment! That’s why LAs had 3 year rolling Water Services Investment Programmes and capacity and upgrades done, plants extension done, Watermains Rehabilitation Programmes, design build contracts, etc.
The ongoing LAs 970 build, design contracts, upgrade contracts, Watermains Rehabilitation Programmes, etc to IW in 2014 through legislation which included over 400 wastewater upgrade, design build contracts!!.It was up to IW how they wanted to progress these contracts.

The EPA Report highlighted:’ IW is taking too long to complete some of the improvements necessary to protect the environment’.
:’In 2016 IW said it would stop discharging untreated wastewater from 30 of the 36 areas by end of 2020.Its now only on target to provide treatment for 2 of these areas by end of 2020′.etc
The EPA also highlighted that ‘It does not always require significant investment to improve wastewater treatment’.
By the way forgot to mention that when FG came into power in 2011,they substantially slashed the capital expenditure on water infrastructure by €851m from 2011-2013!That must have had serious consequences on improving water infrastructure contracts and projects!
IW getting sufficient Funding according to their economic regulator CRU!

This media supported Irish Water campaign to ‘re-educate” the plebs is way past its sell by date. It’s becoming nauseating. Obviously work needs to be done. BUT!

We already pay all the taxes in their multitude of forms including LPT, VAT, Site service fees and Income taxes as well as spurious Social charges.

It’s clear in recent months that someone somewhere is seriously re working the old water charges idea and feeding it to the media in articles like this.

The conversation should really be about how we can waste so much money over paying for things like Children’s hospital, paying another €40m and counting for repairs to dangerously built schools etc. Rural broadband etc etc.

The state really needs to work out it procurement process. It needs to stop making political decisions when purchasing anything. The days of ‘arragowanshure’ corruption in procurement need to stop now. The state over pays for everything. If it sorted this out there would be a lot of current finds available for things like this.

The last thing we need is to let Fianna Fail slip in through the back door by not addressing this issue. If they came back the situation would only get worse.
