Super Valu once again tops the podium in the supermarket derby, but Lidl and Aldi are on the march...

It’s been a good month for the German discount retailers.

Pascal Pascal Pascal

IRISH-OWNED SUPER Valu has maintained its place at the top of the supermarket tree according to the latest figures.

The newly released market share numbers from industry experts Kantar Worldpanel show that Super Valu has maintained its top spot ahead of rivals Tesco and Dunnes Stores.

However, the real movers and shakers this month are German retailers Lidl and Aldi, which have hoovered up 0.6% of the market in Ireland since June.

Super Valu’s market share actually declined slightly from the 22.3% it held in June to 22.1% in the 12 weeks up to 16 July.

However Tesco also slipped back a couple of points in second place from 22.1% to 21.9%, with Dunnes likewise declining in third from 21.6% to 21.5%.

Lidl meanwhile jumped from 11.7% to 12.1%, with Aldi climbing from 11.2% to 11.4%. Here’s the top five breakdown:

kantar2 Kantar Worldpanel Ireland Kantar Worldpanel Ireland

  • Supervalu – 22.1%
  • Tesco – 21.9%
  • Dunnes – 21.5%
  • Lidl – 12.1%
  • Aldi – 11.4%

“Lidl and Aldi have enjoyed strong performances over the past 12 weeks – Lidl’s growth accelerated to 3.8%, with Aldi boosting sales by 3.7%,” said Kantar’s Cora Campbell.

Both retailers have captured a larger share of the grocery market – Lidl’s market share now stands at 12.1% with Aldi close behind holding 11.4%.  Lidl and Aldi have both benefited from shoppers visiting their stores more regularly over the most recent quarter.

Despite recent price deflation, Ireland’s grocery market is continuing its growth – up 2% during the last quarter compared to the same time last year.

In-house brands meanwhile remain the most popular choice for consumers, accounting for 55% of total grocery spend in Ireland.

@The Girl: yeah but the food is of lower quality and Dunnes have that €10 voucher giveaway for every €50 you spend. It’s a great deal.

@Alan: food isn’t lower quality. And €50 in Aldi or lidl goes a lot further than €60 in dunnes.

@Kerry Blake: I could go into the jigs and reels but essentially, there is different grades of meat, fruit and veg. The best goes to the highest bidder then downwards. When I was in the industry, SV paid top and Lidl and Aldi bottom. That might have changed but I doubt it.

I still shop in them but get my fresh food in SV when possible.

@Damian Kelly: it’s not just my 2 sisters that are having problems there. The older staff especially (who have contracts) are getting treated very badly. Delighted to hear things are going well for you but believe me it’s a disaster where they work.

@Sinead Hanley: You have it wrong. Superquinn was sold to Select Holdings in 2005. They changed the conditions I’d imagine. Select went bust and SV bought it then.

Why would anybody shop in Tesco barring its the only shop in the locality. They dont support Irish suppliers and then trying to change the contracts of long standing employees. An absolute disgrace!

How can you publish this article without mentioning the number of outlets that each firm has, or the total square footage of retail area.
Obviously some firms are larger due to historically being established in more places.

I questioned the reliability and the objectivity of Kantar’s figures. Both Aldi and Lidl’s market share are under-reported. I reckon they are at least closer to 15% nationally. On a local level, this varied up to 20%. This is very much reflected in the increasing density from more stores being open. At an observation level, I find myself more likely to encountered queues / overcrowding in either German stores than the rest. Is Kantar too scare to admit, the Germans are more closer at the heels of their competitors.

Lidl is fantastic and aldi too. My only issue is having to throw everything into the trolley immediately after she/he scans the items. And if you take a little longer you get the owl eyes staring at you as if to say keep up! Far too rushed. I prefer tesco for the shopping experience but in tesco I’d get one bag for 3 or 4 bags in lidl or aldi and that’s a fact.
