'I must answer for what I've done': Kevin Myers breaks silence and issues apology over offensive column

The article published on Sunday has been branded “sexist” and “anti-Semitic”.

JOURNALIST KEVIN MYERS has spoken out for the first time since his controversial Sunday Times column was criticised – and admitted that he deserved to be fired.

Speaking on Today with Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio 1 this morning, Myers issued an apology for the column, which has been branded as “sexist” and “anti-Semitic”.

“I am the author of that article, I am the author of my own misfortunes, I am the master of my soul,” Myers told presenter Sean O’Rourke.

“I must answer for what I have done.”

The opinion piece, which appeared in the Irish print edition, was critical of recent calls for equal pay for men and women in media organisations after the BBC published its list of highest-paid stars and only one woman made the top 10.

On Sunday afternoon, the online version of the article was removed, and both editors of the British and Irish editions issued apologies.

Myers told O’Rourke today that he had been informed by The Sunday Times in London that he had been fired from the publication on Sunday afternoon.

O’Rourke asked Myers if he believed he should have been fired, to which Myers said:

“I think so because of the impossible situation they were placed in. The manner in which I was disposed of was wrong. It could have been done more gently and I think I could’ve been treated better.”

In the article, which is entitled “Sorry, ladies – equal pay has to be earned”, Irish journalist Myers argued that men may get paid more for a variety of reasons:

Is it because men are more charismatic performers? Because they work harder? Because they are more driven? Possibly a bit of each.

In a later section, the article highlights that the two highest-paid female BBC presenters are Jewish.

‘I’m not misogynistic’

Myers issued an apology to the women, Claudia Winkleman and Vanessa Feltz, over the column.

“I am very, very sorry to them, I really mean it, I’m not rescuing anything as far as I can see, it’s over for me.

“I am issuing an apology for no other reason than the contrition of the hurt I have caused them,” he said.

Yesterday, BBC presenter Vanessa Feltz described the column as “horrifying racism”.

Speaking on BBC Radio London, Feltz questioned how “something so blatantly racist” was allowed in the newspaper.

“When someone alerted me to it… I couldn’t believe such a thing had been printed. It is absolutely gratuitous, not cleverly done, it’s blatant racism. When you see it like that it’s very horrifying,” she said.

“The editor personally rung me to apologise. He said he was horrified.”

This morning, Myers went on to deny that he is misogynistic or anti-Semitic.

I’m not misogynistic, I’m a critic of political feminism but I’m not misogynistic.

“[Misogyny] is a simple way of labelling someone who means you don’t have to listen to what they have to say.

I don’t believe in equality.

“I’m talking about the issue of when feminists talk about in the BBC who believe the woman making the tea or cleaning the floor isn’t equal to the star presenter.”

Earlier in his chat with O’Rourke, Myers said that he was a “great admirer of the Jewish people”, stating that he thinks “they are the most gifted people who have ever existed on this planet”.

Yesterday, the Press Ombudsman confirmed to TheJournal.ie that four complaints were lodged in relation to the column.

A spokesperson for the Independent Press Standards Organisation, the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK, also confirmed to TheJournal.ie that it received a total of 25 complaints.

So if this is all Myers fault can someone explain to me what exactly the editor of the Sunday Times actually does? Surely someone in the paper read, saw nothing wrong with his column and then allowed it to be printed? How is this then Myers fault?
I see above the editor was “horrified” and personally rang one of the women to apologise. How can you be horrified when you obviously saw nothing wrong and allowed it to be printed in the first place?

@Niall Sullivan: I don’t agree, I think it’s fair enough to apologise – it obviously slipped by him, it’s not something he’d stand behind, and he did stand up and apologise. All credit to that editor for acknowledging it and taking his share of responsibility. We read too much rubbish from hospitals, for example, when more serious mistakes are made, and all the people affected want is an honest admission that a mistake happened on their watch, and that it won’t keep happening again to others. Instead we get silence and legal formalities. I think it’s refreshing to have the fact that he was open about his part and personally contacted the people singled out. To me that’s reasonable behaviour on his part and he did a decent thing.

Says it all really. If you have an opinion different from the gender fascists and social police, you’re “branded” as misogynist and anti Semite. You’re no platformed, and called filth by the twitter mob. This, ladies and gentlemen is modern liberalism, feminism, whatever you want to call it. It’s the creeping far left ideology whose end goal will be to police your thoughts, once the technology becomes available of course.

Is any of this the part of the Holocaust that matters to you? Would it matter less if the figure were 4m? So no, he didn’t deny the most important aspect of Holocaust historiography. @Squarepeg01: Absolutely. I agree that there’s nothing wrong with honourably earning money.

However, very often, the people that use this trope are not in the same camp. There is a very nasty undercurrent in political discourse that believe some sort of ‘Jewish banking cartel’ run the world behind the scenes. Plenty of pseudo-intellectuals will list off facts about the number of Jews running ‘evil’ corporations, for example.

Anti-semitism is one of the more repulsive prejudices as it has this conspiratorial element. It’s also a destructive prejudice – demonstrated forcefully by the NSDAP in the 30s and 40s and today by Islamist factions.

I’m saying this trope of the rich Jew is used very effectively by vociferous anti-semites to drum up hatred towards Jews who they perceive as too powerful and influential. It’s the idea of the rich self-interested Jews running the show behind the scenes that got so many Germans on board during the rise of the Nazi regime and it’s still used as a stick to beat Jews with in the Arab world today.

I’m fair worried about the future of intelligent discourse and free speech. I find it ironic that the Jews at one time were victims of the dreadful Gestapo who silenced anyone with differing views with a firing squad or worse and were incarcerated in horrendous camps now seek to limit discourse that they perceive disagreeable to them and keep Palestinians in interment camps. Several races have had an event similiar to the holocaust. It’s not a uniquely Jewish horror story. They have moved on, commemorating the event but not letting it cloud their future. The Jews need to move on too and not be defined by that terrible period.

Fair dues to Myers for at least partly recognising his error. He allows for his contribution in contrast to those who seek absolutely to exculpate him.

I don’t believe that women are inferior to men. Individual variations in capacity and capability are vastly more significant than over generalised extrapolations from insufficient and selectively chosen evidence.

None of us (generally) are equal in terms of our abilities such as Financial , physical , language etc. as it differs from one human to the next. Myres was not making a general statement that women are not equal to men. He stated that men in certain areas have different abilities than women. The financial world is dominated by males because it requires aggression and risk taking. Men have those attributes in abundance women “generally ” don’t. So women in that regard are not equal to men. Men are not equal to women in certain areas as well and this is recognized by companies. So get off your equality high horse as Myres never implied women were lesser human beings than men!

Kevin Myers is a more educated Katie Hopkins. He has proven himself in the past to be racist, misogynistic and filled with vitriolic bile towards anyone who doesn’t hold a viewpoint similar to his own.
He promoted British colonialism and ignored the rape, murder and torture carried out by the British across the globe.
He was given a platform for years by the indo and the Irish times.
He insulted every race going and constantly proved himself to be misogynistic despite the statement to the contrary by Myers and the idiots on here.
Oddly, it was never called out for what it was by the Irish people. He got away with it, in the same way Conor MacGregor is able to get away with blatant racism now.
His crucial mistake was making anti-Semitic comments. The Jewish people would be right to be angered by these clearly anti-Semitic comments but why wasn’t he pulled up before?
Lovely irony that it was only when his comments hit England that he got sacked. His years of open courting of Britain, while slating Ireland didn’t matter a jot in the end.

Good riddance to this mouthpiece with his hate speech and text that amounted to incitement to hatred and violence (shell cops being encouraged to run over protesters heads with diggers).
For those saying he’s not afraid to say it as it is – well done, you’re as racist and misogynistic as he is.

He’s an opinon writer, not a journalist. We have a tonne of them in Ireland. they regulary appear on tv and radio panels. Big difference to sitting at your desk in West Wicklow to getting a story. He knew what he was doing. He will be snapped up again in a few weeks. This isnt the last we have heard of Colour Sergeant Myers of the 2nd Leicesterhire Dragoons.

Kevin is a superb journalist and writer. An Irishman diary in the IT had many classic moments. He was fearless in attacking sacred cows and b**ls**t of all types. Made a few blunders. Who doesn’t?

the Idea that an ethnic group would stick to their own and look after each other is dangerously offensive, he is literally a nazi and I hope he dies in the gutter sooner rather than later

@James Russell: now that is possibly the most bigotted reaction I have read so far in a sorry stream of overreactions. BTW – do you even know the meaning of the word ‘literally’.
